LightWELD Laser Welders

The IPG LightWELD is the machine that put handheld laser welding on the map for serious fabricators and industrial shops across North America. Built by IPG Photonics — the world's largest manufacturer of fiber laser sources — the LightWELD lineup is engineered to a standard that simply does not compromise: 100% duty cycle air-cooled operation, US-manufactured components, advanced pulse control, and pre-weld and post-weld laser cleaning built into the same unit. The LightWELD handles stainless steel, aluminum, carbon steel, galvanized steel, copper, brass, and titanium, with a wobble welding system that improves gap tolerance and bead consistency on every pass. For aerospace, automotive OEM work, and demanding production environments, it remains the industry benchmark.

The LightWELD is a premium investment — priced significantly above entry-level machines — but it delivers premium performance, a best-in-class warranty and support network, and the confidence of buying from the company whose fiber laser technology powers industrial systems worldwide. At The Maker's Chest, we can help you compare LightWELD against alternative machines at different price points so you buy the right level of machine for your actual application. Book a free consultation — our team will give you an honest assessment of whether LightWELD is worth the investment for your specific use case.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is LightWELD and how is it different from traditional MIG or TIG welding?

LightWELD is IPG Photonics' handheld fiber laser welding system, pairing a compact, air-cooled laser source with a handheld gun for a faster setup than MIG or TIG. The units range from 1500W to 3000W depending on the model, and the handheld gun combines welding, cutting, and cleaning modes in one tool. Novices can typically start producing clean welds within a few hours of training rather than the months it takes to get proficient with a traditional torch, since the onboard presets handle most of the parameter tuning automatically.

What materials and thicknesses can LightWELD handle?

LightWELD welds stainless steel, mild steel, aluminum, and other common metals up to roughly 3mm thick in a single pass, with the system offering 74 stored and user-defined presets tuned to specific material and thickness combinations. Selecting the right preset removes most of the guesswork that comes with dialing in amperage and wire speed manually, since the machine adjusts power and pulse frequency automatically once you pick the material and gauge. Thicker joints still benefit from multiple passes or a traditional welder.

Does LightWELD require a water chiller?

No. LightWELD uses IPG's proprietary air-cooling design instead of a water-cooled chiller, which keeps the system smaller, lighter, and simpler to set up in a home or small shop. The tradeoff is a slightly lower duty cycle than water-cooled industrial lasers, since air cooling can't pull heat away as fast during extended, high-power runs. Skipping the chiller also means one less system to maintain and troubleshoot compared to water-cooled industrial lasers, which need regular coolant checks and leak inspections.
