Most welders spend 40% of their project time on tasks that aren't welding — grinding spatter, straightening warped panels, swapping between machines for cutting and cleaning. The Xlaserlab X1 Pro eliminates all of that. With 700W of fiber laser power and four fully integrated functions — welding, cutting, rust removal, and surface cleaning — it's the only machine you need for thin-to-medium metal work. And unlike traditional TIG or MIG setups, most users are laying clean, professional-quality welds within hours of their first use.
At The Maker's Chest, we've evaluated dozens of handheld laser welders across weld quality, build durability, ease of setup, and real-world usability. The X1 Pro earns its spot as our top recommendation because it consistently delivers where it matters: clean seams on stainless with zero post-grinding, minimal heat distortion on thin sheet metal, and a learning curve that doesn't require a welding background to master.
The X1 Pro is not an entry-level toy and it's not an industrial floor machine. It sits in exactly the right spot for:
The X1 Pro's 700W fiber laser operates at a 1080 nm wavelength with a 36% photoelectric conversion rate — specs that translate into real-world results you can see immediately. The beam is focused to a precise spot, creating a narrow heat-affected zone (HAZ) that means far less thermal distortion than MIG or TIG. On stainless steel especially, the welds come out smooth, uniform, and spatter-free — often requiring zero grinding or polishing.
Three welding modes give you full control across every application:
The included auto wire feeder supports both continuous and pulse wire delivery. For users who want the classic "stack of dimes" TIG appearance, running continuous laser mode with pulse wire feed replicates it perfectly. The 7" touchscreen HMI lets you save and recall material-specific presets instantly, and the welding gun stores up to three custom presets for fast on-gun switching mid-project.
Compatible materials: Stainless steel (304/316), carbon steel, mild steel, aluminum, galvanized steel, titanium, nickel alloys, copper, brass, magnesium, and most ferrous and non-ferrous alloys. The X1 Pro also handles dissimilar metal welds — joining stainless to carbon steel, copper to aluminum — tasks that challenge even experienced TIG welders.
The laser cleaning function is consistently the feature that surprises buyers the most — especially anyone doing restoration work. Point the nozzle at a rusty panel, pull the trigger, and watch decades of corrosion ablate off the surface in seconds, leaving clean bare metal that's ready to weld or paint. No chemicals. No abrasives. No damage to the underlying metal.
Use laser cleaning for:
For a restoration shop, the cleaning function alone can justify the machine — it replaces a sandblaster, an angle grinder with flap disc, and a chemical rust treatment in one tool that's faster and gentler on your base metal than all three.
Swap to the cutting nozzle and the X1 Pro doubles as a precision metal cutting tool. Slice through stainless steel and carbon steel up to 3mm thick with clean, smooth edges that need little to no finishing. It's not a replacement for a heavy-duty plasma cutter on thick plate, but for thin sheet metal cutting, intricate shapes, and situations where you'd rather not deal with a plasma's dross and heat distortion, it's a genuinely capable solution — and it's already part of your machine.
Most industrial laser welders require a dedicated water chiller — a heavy, stationary piece of equipment that tethers you to your shop floor. The X1 Pro uses a fully integrated air-cooling system that keeps the laser source and optics at safe operating temperature without any water maintenance, hoses, or antifreeze changes.
At 21 kg with a compact, integrated housing, the X1 Pro is among the lightest and most portable machines in its class — and it doesn't sacrifice duty cycle or stability to get there.
The X1 Pro ships as a complete, ready-to-weld system. Every pack includes the core machine and everything you need to start welding from day one. You will need to supply your own shielding gas (argon is recommended for most metals) and a welding wire spool in your preferred alloy and diameter. Everything else ships in the box.

The X1 Pro is a Class 4 fiber laser — the highest power classification. It demands respect and proper protective equipment. Standard auto-darkening welding helmets provide no protection against laser radiation at 1064 nm. The included OD8+ goggles are the minimum safe eyewear for operation; the helmet included in the Ultimate and Dual Wire Feeder packs provides superior comfort and protection for extended sessions.
Additional safety practices we strongly recommend:
You can buy the X1 Pro from Xlaserlab directly, or from a dozen other resellers. Here's why our customers consistently choose us:
If you're ready to stop grinding, stop warping, and stop settling for welds that need an hour of cleanup — the Xlaserlab X1 Pro is the machine. And The Maker's Chest is the place to buy it.
The X1 Pro works on all common metals: stainless steel (304/316), carbon steel, mild steel, aluminum, galvanized steel, titanium, copper, brass, nickel alloys, and magnesium. It handles dissimilar metal welds (e.g., stainless to carbon steel) that are difficult or impossible with traditional welding methods. The laser cleaning function works on any metal surface — removing rust, paint, oil, oxide, and weld discoloration without abrasives or chemicals.
The X1 Pro's practical processing range is 0.5mm to 3mm (approximately 0.020" to 0.118"). This covers the vast majority of sheet metal work — body panels, thin stainless tubing, decorative components, brackets, and frames. For material thicker than 3mm, a higher-wattage machine or traditional MIG/TIG is a better fit. The sweet spot for clean, fast welds with minimal distortion is 0.5–2mm.
No prior welding experience is required, though some basic familiarity with metalwork helps. Most users — including complete beginners — are laying clean, usable welds within hours of first use. The learning curve is far shorter than TIG welding. The most important things to learn are maintaining correct standoff distance (2–3mm), achieving tight joint fit-up (gaps cause burn-through), and selecting the right mode for your material thickness.
The machine is identical across all three packs — same 700W laser, same performance. The packs differ in what's bundled with it. The Basic Pack (12 items) includes the core machine, gun, wire feeder, nozzles, gas fittings, and safety goggles. The Ultimate Pack (17 items) adds a laser welding helmet, welding apron, two spare focusing lenses, and a 5-pack of replacement protective windows. The Dual Wire Feeder Pack includes everything in the Ultimate Pack plus the DW1 dual wire feeder, which expands your maximum weld width from 3.5mm to 7mm and enables higher filler deposition for structural joints. See our pack comparison table above for a full breakdown.
Continuous mode runs the laser as a steady beam — best for longer seams on material 1mm and thicker where speed matters. Pulse mode fires the beam in timed bursts — ideal for thin sheet metal, delicate assemblies, and situations where heat distortion is a concern. Spot mode creates individual fusion points — used for tack welding, small attachments, and precision work in tight spaces. A useful technique: combine continuous laser mode with pulse wire feeder for a "stack of dimes" TIG appearance on stainless steel.
Yes — shielding gas is required for welding to protect the weld pool from oxidation and to maintain lens life. Argon is the most common choice for most metals and produces the best results. Nitrogen is a lower-cost alternative that works well on carbon steel. Air can be used in some cleaning and cutting applications. Budget for ongoing argon costs as part of your operating expenses — it's the primary consumable beyond protective lens windows.
No. The X1 Pro uses a fully integrated air-cooling system — no water tank, no hoses, no antifreeze. This is what makes it genuinely portable and easy to deploy on-site or in small workshops. The trade-off versus water-cooled industrial machines is that the X1 Pro is optimized for thin-to-medium material (under 3mm) rather than heavy continuous-duty thick-plate welding — which is exactly its design intent.
The X1 Pro is a Class 4 laser. Standard auto-darkening welding helmets do not protect against laser radiation. You must use laser safety eyewear rated at OD8+ for the 1064 nm wavelength. Safety goggles meeting this spec are included in all packs; the Ultimate and Dual Wire Feeder packs also include a full OD8+ laser welding helmet for better comfort during extended sessions. Everyone in the work area must wear appropriate eye protection when the laser is active. Leather gloves, long sleeves, and closed-toe shoes are strongly recommended. Adequate ventilation or fume extraction is required, particularly when cleaning coated or galvanized surfaces.
The X1 Pro operates on 100–240V AC, 50/60 Hz — compatible with standard North American and international outlets. Full-load current draw is under 25A. Most standard 20A or 30A workshop circuits will support it without any electrical upgrades. If you're unsure about your shop's power setup, reach out before purchasing and we'll help you confirm compatibility.
Laser welding is significantly faster (2–5x) than TIG on thin material, produces a much smaller heat-affected zone (meaning far less warping and distortion), and requires less skill to produce clean results. The weld quality on stainless steel is often superior to MIG cosmetically and comparable or better than TIG. The key limitations: the X1 Pro's 3mm thickness ceiling means it won't replace MIG or stick for structural or heavy fab work, and laser welding requires tighter joint fit-up than MIG — gaps in a joint will cause burn-through, not bridge. For the right applications, it's genuinely the best tool available.
Yes, and it handles aluminum better than many people expect — including the ability to weld aluminum that isn't perfectly clean, which TIG cannot. That said, aluminum is less forgiving than stainless steel due to its reflectivity and thermal conductivity. We recommend starting on stainless steel to develop your standoff distance and travel speed feel before moving to aluminum. For shops where aluminum welding is a primary use case, the Dual Wire Feeder pack provides additional filler deposition control that improves results on aluminum joints.
The X1 Pro operates reliably in ambient temperatures from -20°C to 40°C (-4°F to 104°F) and can be stored between -20°C and 85°C (-4°F to 185°F). It's designed for both indoor shop use and outdoor field conditions within that range.
Absolutely. We offer free pre-purchase consultations to make sure you're getting the right machine and the right pack for your application. We provide round the clock customer support. Even if we're not manning the phones late at night, you can reach out to us via email or chat on the website. Our official business hours are Monday - Friday, 9am - 5pm, but outside of these hours we're still here, and we'll get back to you as soon as we can!
Remember, we're always here to help, so give us a call on +1 833-962-5377, email us at support@themakerschest.com, or chat with us using the chat bubble in the bottom right corner of your screen.
