The Laser Fume Extractor That Grows With Your Business.

The Filtrabox ExpandX-1 is a portable 3-stage laser fume extractor for small to mid-sized industrial CO2 laser systems — delivering 99.999% HEPA filtration, 80 lbs of activated carbon gas media, and an intelligent flow regulator in a slim, 15-inch-wide cabinet that recirculates clean air back into your workspace. And when your production volume grows, a single blower module upgrade converts it to the ExpandX-2 — no new machine, no new footprint, twice the airflow

Why Serious Laser Shops Choose Filtrabox Over a Generic Extractor

The fume extractor market has a wide range: basic inline fans, simple single-stage units from laser manufacturers, and purpose-engineered systems like the ExpandX-1. The gap between them isn't marginal.

Most OEM-supplied extractors and entry-level fume units use a single activated carbon filter with a basic fan — enough to move air and reduce odor noticeably, but not designed around the full spectrum of contaminants laser cutting and engraving actually generates. Laser processing produces both submicron particulate (metal oxides, carbon, polymer degradation products) and VOC gases (acrylic off-gassing, wood terpenes, rubber compounds). A single-stage unit handles one or the other poorly.

The ExpandX-1 uses individually separated filters, each optimized for specific contaminants — a modular approach that ensures maximum efficiency and cost-effectiveness by allowing replacement of only the filters that need it.

Three stages. Separate cartridges. Each stage replaced only when it's actually spent.

3-Stage Filtration: What Each Stage Actually Does

Stage 1 — F9 Pre-Filter (15 m², Rigid Aluminum Cartridge, includes 1 spare): The pre-filter removes the majority of submicron respirable dust, protecting the critical downstream HEPA filter from strain and premature clogging. Mini-pleat glass fiber media in a rigid aluminum box — not cardboard, not plastic, not a soft frame that flexes under suction. The ExpandX-1 ships with one pre-filter installed and one spare, so you have a replacement ready when the first one loads.

Stage 2 — HEPA H14 Filter (15 m², Rigid Aluminum Cartridge): Tested at 99.999% efficiency at 0.3 microns — the most aerodynamically penetrating particle size. Smaller and larger particles are captured at even higher rates. The rigid aluminum cartridge is what makes this specification achievable in a real shop environment. Filtrabox uses high-pressure vacuum blowers that increase negative pressure within the cabinet as filters load. Cardboard-cased filters flex and crumple under this pressure, leading to leakage of contaminants. The aluminum structure resists flex so rubber seals maintain contact with sealing surfaces.

Stage 3 — Chemical Gas Filter (80 lbs Activated Carbon + Potassium Permanganate): The blend of high-grade coconut-shell activated carbon and potassium permanganate removes the broadest spectrum of laser-generated VOC gases at the molecular level. At 80 lbs, the ExpandX-1's gas media capacity is significantly larger than most competing units in this class — which is why it handles high-VOC materials like acrylic without the filter loading rapidly and odor breaking through.

Why Separate Filters Save You Money

The separation of the HEPA and gas filter stages into independent cartridges isn't just an engineering feature — it's a long-term cost decision.

Different materials produce different proportions of dust vs. VOC gases. Lasering acrylic produces 90% VOC gases and 10% dust. Lasering wood produces 10% gases and 90% dust. With individually separated filters, each filter can be replaced when it's actually spent — which varies with each material lasered.

If you run mostly acrylic, your gas filter loads fast and your HEPA barely loads at all. With a combined HEPA/carbon cartridge, you replace both when the carbon is spent — discarding a functional HEPA stage. With the ExpandX-1's separated design, you replace the gas filter on its actual schedule and the HEPA on its own schedule. The result: lower annual filter cost, less waste, and more accurate budget forecasting for a known maintenance cycle.

Intelligent Flow Regulator — Performance Doesn't Degrade as Filters Load

Here's a problem most fume extractor buyers don't know to look for: as filters accumulate dust and gases over time, resistance increases and airflow drops. A machine rated at 235 CFM on day one may be delivering 150–180 CFM by the time the filter change indicator trips — meaning you're running with degraded extraction performance for weeks before the issue is visible.

The intelligent flow regulator proportionally increases power to the blower to automatically overcome restrictions as filters load, maintaining consistent fume extraction throughout the filter lifecycle. Just enter your flow setpoint and Filtrabox does the rest.

The regulator also monitors the system and notifies you when it's actually time to change filters — not on a guessed schedule, but based on real-time performance data. You're replacing filters when they're spent, not before, and not after their degradation starts affecting your extraction quality.

Slim-Line Design: Space Saving Without Sacrificing Capacity

Most laser shops compromise on fume extraction because the units are bulky. The typical response from manufacturers is to make smaller machines — but smaller means less filter media, more noise, and lower airflow. The ExpandX-1 takes a different approach.

The slim-line design shrinks the width and relocates critical performance features into the plentiful depth dimension — allowing maximum airflow, filter capacity, and noise reduction in a space-saving package with no compromises.

At 15 inches wide by 38 inches tall, the ExpandX-1 fits beside or behind most laser engraver setups without dominating the workspace. The top-mounted air inlet (rather than side or rear) means the connection hose doesn't consume lateral bench space — it exits upward and out of the way.

At 50 dB, it operates quietly enough that it won't be audible over the normal sounds of a working shop.

Expandable: Buy One Blower Today, Add the Second Tomorrow

The ExpandX-1's most operationally significant feature is the one you might not need right away: the expansion slot for a second blower module.

An upgrade blower module can be added at any time for 2x more airflow — effectively converting the ExpandX-1 to an ExpandX-2 for more demanding applications or two laser setups.

This matters for two real scenarios. First, if your production volume grows and 235 CFM becomes a bottleneck, you add the blower module rather than buying a new machine. Second, if you add a second laser to your shop, the ExpandX-2 configuration handles both — one extractor serving two machines simultaneously.

The investment in the ExpandX-1 protects your future capacity options without requiring you to over-buy on day one.

Digital Blower With Hyper Bearings: No Maintenance, No Suction Loss

Traditional brushed blowers inevitably wear out, lose suction, and need replacement. Filtrabox's combination of digital contactless rotors and contaminant-resistant hyper bearings allows for extreme rotational speeds and maintenance-free operation for years — more suction power, no maintenance.

The blower is the component that most often causes gradual, unnoticed performance degradation on inferior extractors — as brushes wear, suction drops without any indicator, and air quality in the workspace slowly declines. The ExpandX-1's digital blower has no brushes to wear and no bearing surfaces that contaminant particles can damage.

Modular Serviceability: Fast Field Repairs, No Tech Required

The ExpandX-1 consolidates all components into two simple, removable modules: the Electronics Module (interface, control, and power systems) and the Blower Module (blower and flow sensor). In the event of a field issue, tech support diagnoses which module is involved and dispatches the appropriate replacement. The modules replace with only a few plug-and-play wire harnesses — no tech experience required.

A fume extractor that goes down in a production shop is a revenue problem, not just a maintenance issue. The modular design means downtime is measured in hours rather than days or weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions about Filtrabox ExpandX-1 Laser Fume Extractor

Q: What laser systems is the ExpandX-1 designed for?

A: Small to mid-sized industrial CO2 laser engravers and cutters — typically machines in the 30W to 100W range running one to two shifts daily. For larger laser systems, high-wattage production lasers, or shops running the machine continuously at maximum capacity, the ExpandX-2 (dual blower) is the more appropriate starting configuration. Contact our team with your laser model and daily runtime and we'll recommend the right fit.

Q: Can I really upgrade to the ExpandX-2 later, and how difficult is it?

A: Yes. An upgrade blower module can be added at any time for 2x more airflow, effectively converting the ExpandX-1 to an ExpandX-2. The second blower module installs into the pre-designed expansion slot. The process is straightforward and doesn't require technical expertise — the same plug-and-play wire harness approach used for serviceability applies to the blower expansion.

Q: Why does it have 80 lbs of carbon media when some units have 5–10 lbs? A: Carbon capacity directly determines how long the gas filter stage lasts before needing replacement — and how well it handles high-VOC materials like acrylic. A unit with 5–10 lbs of carbon will be overwhelmed quickly when processing acrylic, requiring frequent replacement and often showing odor breakthrough before the scheduled change. At 80 lbs, the ExpandX-1 has roughly 8–16 times the carbon capacity of typical lower-cost units, resulting in dramatically longer intervals between gas filter replacements and more consistent odor elimination throughout the filter lifecycle.

Q: Why are separate filter stages better than a combined HEPA/carbon cartridge? A: Acrylic produces 90% VOC gases and 10% dust. Wood produces 10% gases and 90% dust. With a combined filter, you replace both stages when one is spent — even if the other has useful life remaining. With separated stages, each is replaced only when it's actually exhausted. Over a year of production, this translates to lower filter costs and less unnecessary waste.

Q: What does the intelligent flow regulator actually do? A: As filters load with contaminants and become more restrictive, the intelligent flow regulator proportionally increases blower power to maintain the set airflow rate, ensuring consistent extraction performance throughout the filter lifecycle. Without this, extraction efficiency drops gradually from day one to filter change day, potentially exposing operators to increasing fume levels without any indication that performance has degraded.

Q: Does it need to be ducted outside? A: No. The ExpandX-1 processes extracted air through its three-stage filtration system and recirculates clean air back into the workspace — no exterior ductwork, no wall penetrations, no installation contractor. This makes it operational in windowless rooms, basement shops, shared office spaces, and any environment where running an exhaust duct is impractical or impossible.

Q: Why does the pre-filter come with a spare included? A: The pre-filter loads faster than the HEPA because it handles the bulk of the particle load — protecting the more expensive HEPA stage from premature exhaustion. Including a spare means you have a replacement on hand when the first pre-filter needs changing, avoiding production interruption while waiting for a filter to arrive. It's a practical detail that reduces downtime.

Q: What power does it require? A: 120V, 12A or 230V, 6A — auto-switching between both voltages. Standard workshop outlets work on either configuration. For 120V operation, a standard 15A or 20A circuit is appropriate.

Q: Why buy from The Maker's Chest instead of directly from Filtrabox? A: Our 75-day return window gives you real production evaluation time to confirm the unit performs for your specific laser and material mix. Our USA-based expert support team is reachable by phone and email and can help with installation, filter selection guidance for your specific materials, and any issues that arise in production. If you're deciding between the ExpandX-1 and the ExpandX-2 starting configuration, we'll give you a straight recommendation based on your actual setup.

Once your order has dispatched from our warehouse, you'll receive shipping confirmation within 24 hours of your order leaving our warehouse.

General Delivery Timeframes
Delivery timeframes will vary dependent on your location and the items you've ordered.

In general, these are the delivery timeframes you can expect:

  • 1-7 Business Days - Delivery within the contiguous United States

The above is intended to be used as a guide, and may not apply in all cases. Some products may have specific 'Delivery Timeframe' information, which can be found on its own tab, or on the main 'Description' tab of the product.

Home Delivery (Bulky Items)

  • This service is generally for products over 40kg in weight, as it is a requirement for these products to be palletised for delivery.
  • This service utilises power tailgates with two-man crews or crane trucks when required and this is included in the quoted price.
  • The receiver will be contacted prior to delivery to arrange a suitable delivery date and time. Deliveries are scheduled for either an AM or PM slot on any given day.
  • Delivery is to front car port, driveway, doorstep or wherever practical depending upon site access. Drivers are not permitted to move item(s) within the residence or around the property due to OHS reasons.
  • This service assumes reasonable and safe access to the site is available. Overhanging trees, steep driveways, unsealed driveways, narrow driveways or streets or an unforeseen obstruction may deem the delivery unavailable.
  • If your delivery address is in a regional or remote location, we recommend shipping to the nearest depot as the most affordable option.

Other Terms & Conditions

If you happen to miss the delivery, you will be required to pick up your item(s) from the freight company's depot. Re-delivery can be arranged to your home, however this will incur extra costs.

We can't advise on the exact time and day the delivery will occur as this is not within our control, however you will be emailed the tracking details where you will be able to contact the freight company for more accurate timeframes.

It is your responsibility to advise us if:

  • someone will be available to sign for delivery.
  • there's somewhere safe the item can be left if no one will be home.
  • if the address is a business address, as we will require the business hours of the business and name of the building.
  • you notice any damage. If so, you should make note of it when signing for delivery or do not agree to accept the delivery. If you do accept delivery you are required to immediately take photos using your smart phone or camera of the damaged packaging or products inside the packaging. If your item(s) do arrived damaged please send photos to support@themakerschest.com, then visit our returns page and lodge your return claim online.
