The Filtrabox range covers everything from the Base (which replaces your laser table entirely) to the triple-blower ExpandX-3 (705 CFM for large industrial systems). The Compact X is the smallest stand-alone extractor in the ExpandX family — sharing the same engineering philosophy, the same filtration approach, and the same quality of construction, but sized for smaller laser systems and tighter spaces.
At 29 inches tall and 21 inches deep, the Compact X is noticeably smaller than the ExpandX-1 (38" tall, 31" deep). The tradeoff is filter media area: the Compact X uses 6 m² pre-filter and HEPA cartridges versus 15 m² in the ExpandX-1. For small to mid-sized lasers running moderate daily sessions, the 6 m² configuration is appropriate — filter replacement intervals will be shorter under very heavy use, but the filtration performance at point of use is identical.
The Compact X delivers excellent performance for small to mid-sized industrial laser systems, extracting, filtering, and recirculating clean air into the workspace.
If you're unsure whether the Compact X or the ExpandX-1 is the right fit for your laser and usage pattern, our team can help you decide before you order.
The Compact X's filtration approach is identical to the rest of the Filtrabox line — three individually separated filter cartridges, each doing a specific job, each replaceable independently.
Stage 1 — F9 Pre-Filter (6 m², Rigid Aluminum Cartridge): Captures the bulk of submicron respirable dust before it reaches the HEPA stage. The pre-filter removes the majority of submicron respirable dust, protecting the critical downstream HEPA filter from strain and premature clogging. Mini-pleat glass fiber media in a rigid aluminum cartridge — no bypass risk from frame flex under suction.
Stage 2 — HEPA H14 Filter (6 m², Rigid Aluminum Cartridge): Tested at 99.999% efficiency at 0.3 microns — removing 99.999% of the most aerodynamically penetrating particles, while smaller and larger particles are captured at even higher rates, resulting in extremely clean air free of respirable dust.
Filtrabox uses high-pressure vacuum blowers that increase negative pressure within the cabinet as filters load. Cardboard-cased filters flex and crumple under this pressure, leading to leakage of contaminants. All Filtrabox filter cartridges use thick aluminum construction to resist flex so rubber seals maintain contact with sealing surfaces.
Stage 3 — Chemical Gas Filter (40 lbs Coconut Shell Carbon + KMnO4, Rigid Aluminum Cartridge): The blend of high-grade coconut-shell activated carbon and potassium permanganate removes the broadest spectrum of laser-generated VOC gases at the molecular level. At 40 lbs, the Compact X's gas media is sized appropriately for smaller laser systems processing mixed materials — delivering genuine odor control without the oversized carbon loads of larger machines designed for industrial-scale processing.
Lasering acrylic produces 90% VOC gases and 10% dust. Lasering wood produces 10% gases and 90% dust. With individually separated filters, each filter can be replaced when it's actually spent — which varies with each material lasered.
For a small studio or maker shop processing a mix of wood, acrylic, leather, and MDF, the pre-filter, HEPA, and gas cartridge will exhaust at different rates depending on what's been run. Separated filters mean each stage is replaced only when it needs to be — not because a combined cartridge has reached the end of its most heavily-loaded portion. Over a year, this is a genuine cost advantage versus combined-filter extractors.
A fume extractor's extraction performance isn't constant across a filter's service life — it degrades as filters load and airflow resistance increases. Most extractors don't compensate for this. The Compact X does.
As filters become loaded with contaminants and become more restrictive, the intelligent flow regulator proportionally increases power to the blower to automatically overcome restrictions and maintain consistent fume extraction. Just enter your flow setpoint and Filtrabox does the rest. The system also alerts you when it's time to change filters — based on actual loading, not a guessed schedule.
For a laser operator running back-to-back jobs all day in a smaller studio, this means the air quality at the end of a long session is maintained at the same level as at the start — without manually monitoring the machine or second-guessing whether extraction is keeping up.
Others try to achieve space savings by offering smaller machines — but this results in less filter capacity, more noise, and less airflow. The slim-line design shrinks the width and relocates critical performance features into the depth dimension, allowing maximum airflow, filter capacity, and noise reduction with no compromises.
At 15 inches wide — the same width as the ExpandX models — the Compact X takes up less lateral bench and floor space than a standard rolling extractor. Its compact 21-inch depth makes it easy to tuck beside or behind a laser system without dominating the workspace.
The top-mounted air inlet is a consistent Filtrabox design detail that matters in tight setups: the intake hose exits upward rather than sideways, so it doesn't consume additional lateral clearance beside the machine. In a constrained studio or shared workspace where every inch of bench space is working, this detail pays dividends.
At 50 dB, the Compact X operates quietly enough for home studios and shared office spaces where a noisy extractor would be a problem.
Traditional brushed blowers inevitably wear out, lose suction, and need replacement. Filtrabox's combination of digital contactless rotors and contaminant-resistant hyper bearings allows for extreme rotational speeds and maintenance-free operation for years — more suction power, no maintenance.
For a Compact X running in a home studio or small shop, the blower is the one mechanical component that would be costly and disruptive to replace. The digital blower design eliminates the wear mechanism that causes conventional blower degradation — the machine maintains suction performance over years of use without blower servicing.
The Compact X consolidates all components into two simple, removable modules: the Electronics Module (interface, control, and power systems) and the Blower Module (blower and flow sensor). In the event of a field issue, tech support diagnoses which module is involved and dispatches the appropriate replacement. The modules replace with only a few plug-and-play wire harnesses — no tech experience required.
For a small business owner or solo maker who can't afford extended machine downtime, this design means any service issue is resolved by module replacement at home — not by shipping a machine to a repair facility.
Technical Specifications:
The Filtrabox Compact X is available from Filtrabox directly and through other distributors. Here's what changes when you order through The Maker's Chest:
Q: How is the Compact X different from the ExpandX-1?
A: Both use the same 3-stage separated filtration approach, intelligent flow regulator, digital blower, and rigid aluminum filter cartridges. The key differences are size and filter media area. The Compact X is 29" tall with 6 m² filter stages and 40 lbs of carbon; the ExpandX-1 is 38" tall with 15 m² filter stages and 80 lbs of carbon. The Compact X is the right choice for smaller laser systems with moderate daily runtime and workspaces where a more compact footprint is a priority. The ExpandX-1 is appropriate for higher-wattage lasers, longer daily sessions, or materials that generate heavy VOC loads like high-volume acrylic processing. Our team can help you decide.
Q: What laser systems is the Compact X designed for?
A: Small to mid-sized CO2 laser engravers and cutters — typically machines in the 30W–80W range running a few hours of mixed material processing per day. For larger lasers, higher-wattage systems, or shops running extended production shifts, the ExpandX-1 or ExpandX-2 is more appropriate. Contact our team with your laser model and daily runtime and we'll confirm the right fit.
Q: Does it need to be ducted outside?
A: No. The Compact X extracts, filters, and recirculates clean air into the workspace. All three filtration stages process extracted fumes and return clean air to the room — no wall penetrations, no outdoor exhaust duct, no installation contractor. This makes it appropriate for home studios, shared workspaces, and any location where running exterior ductwork is impractical.
Q: Why are the filter cartridges made from rigid aluminum instead of cardboard?
A: Filtrabox uses high-pressure vacuum blowers that increase negative pressure within the cabinet as filters load. Cardboard-cased filters flex and crumple under this pressure, allowing contaminated air to bypass the filter entirely. The aluminum box structure resists flex so rubber seals maintain contact with sealing surfaces throughout the filter lifecycle. A filter that bypasses at high pressure is worse than no filter — the Compact X's aluminum construction ensures the filtration works at the pressure levels the machine actually generates.
Q: How do I know when to change filters?
A: The intelligent flow regulator monitors system performance in real time and alerts you when it's time to change filters — based on actual loading, not a guessed schedule. The pre-filter typically loads faster than the HEPA and needs changing more frequently. The gas cartridge's lifespan depends on your material mix — acrylic and rubber generate more VOCs and exhaust the carbon faster than wood.
Q: What power does it require?
A: The Compact X operates on 120V or 230V at 1.1 kW — auto-switching between both voltages. At 120V, it draws approximately 9–10A, well within a standard 15A circuit. No dedicated circuit required in most installations.
Q: Is it quiet enough for a home studio?
A: Yes. At 50 dB, the Compact X operates at a level comparable to a quiet office environment or the background hum of a refrigerator. It's well suited for home studios, basement workshops, and shared spaces where a louder extractor would be intrusive.
Q: Why buy from The Maker's Chest instead of directly from Filtrabox?
A: Our 75-day return window gives you real evaluation time in your actual workspace and with your specific laser — significantly more than Filtrabox's direct policy. Our USA-based expert support team is reachable by phone and email for installation guidance, filter selection advice, and any production questions. If the Compact X isn't quite the right fit after you've run it in your setup, we'll work with you on it.
