Ortur diode engravers ship with some of the clearest assembly instructions in the DIY category, and the Laser Master 2 typically takes 15 to 20 minutes to build and connect before its first cut. Its lower price point compared to enclosed machines also makes it a low-risk way to learn laser software and workflow basics before investing in a pricier system. Fine-tuning power and speed settings still takes some experimentation once it's running, since optimal settings vary by material and even by batch.

Ortur diode lasers engrave wood, leather, paper, and dark or coated acrylic well, but they aren't suited to cutting or marking bare metal or glass. Most Ortur models run in the 5W-20W optical power range, which is enough to cut thin plywood and MDF in multiple passes but not thick hardwood in one go. Organic and coated materials are where diode lasers perform best, while metal work requires a fiber laser instead.

Ortur machines are open-frame diode lasers, which keeps the price low but means the beam and fumes aren't contained like they are on an enclosed unit such as the xTool D1 or S1.
