When experienced permanent jewelry artists are asked what welder they trust for back-to-back appointments at a busy market, a packed studio, or a boutique pop-up running all day — the answer is consistently the same: the Sunstone Orion mPulse®. It's not just popular. It's the standard against which every other permanent jewelry welder is measured.
The mPulse is designed for artists who have moved past the learning curve and want a machine that matches their ambition: precise energy control at the half-Joule level, Tru-Fire Technology® that fires reliably even when contact is imperfect, a 72.75" stylus that reaches any anklet on any client, and a touchscreen that makes setup and adjustment genuinely fast. Sold over 15,000 units worldwide. Made in the USA. Backed by a 3-year manufacturer's warranty.
And when you purchase through The Maker's Chest, you get a 75-day return window — more than double Sunstone's own 30-day policy — plus dual-line expert USA-based support from a team that knows this machine inside and out.
Every permanent jewelry welder fires a pulse arc weld when the electrode touches the jump ring. The difference is what happens when the contact isn't perfect — which, during a busy event with back-to-back clients, is inevitable.
The Orion mPulse® is the only permanent jewelry welder with Tru-Fire Technology® — advanced software that continuously monitors the quality of ground contact and automatically adjusts energy output to compensate. At low energy levels, where fine chain and delicate jump ring welding happens, Tru-Fire Technology® reads the connection and corrects in real time. The result: fewer misfires, fewer re-touches, fewer apologies to waiting clients. The machine just fires — cleanly, reliably, every time.
This is the technology that experienced artists cite most when explaining why they won't go back to anything else. It's not marketing. It's the thing you notice immediately when you use the mPulse at volume.

The mPulse offers a 1–30 Joule energy range, but the real advantage is in how that range is divided. From 1 to 15 Joules — the zone where virtually all fine chain and jump ring welding happens — power adjusts in 0.5-Joule increments. That half-Joule precision is exclusive to the Orion mPulse® among Sunstone's welder lineup.
In practice, this means you can dial in exactly the right energy for a delicate 14k gold-filled box chain without overshooting and scorching the metal — or undershooting and leaving a weak weld. From 16 to 30 Joules, settings adjust in full-Joule increments for heavier chain and jump ring work.
This level of control is why the mPulse produces cleaner, more repeatable welds across a wider range of metals and chain styles than any other welder in this price category.
The Orion mPulse® features a responsive digital touchscreen that makes controlling the welder as natural as using a smartphone. No dials to overshoot, no buttons to memorize. Select your power setting, confirm your setup, and weld.
The touchscreen also opens up two features no other permanent jewelry welder offers:
14 software backgrounds — personalize what displays on your screen to match your brand, your mood, or your table aesthetic. Small detail. Big impression at a pop-up.
Vinyl skins — Sunstone offers an expanding collection of custom vinyl skins that adhere to the sides of the mPulse, giving your welder a unique look that stands out on your table. Only available from Sunstone.
Software updates via USB — the mPulse's software can be updated when Sunstone releases improvements. Your welder gets better over time, not obsolete.

The Orion mPulse® ships with a 72.75" Advanced Orion Stylus — the longest stylus cord of any permanent jewelry welder on the market. Sunstone engineers tested beyond this length and found that argon delivery and energy performance begin to fall off past the 72.75" threshold, so this is the sweet spot: as long as you can go without losing weld quality.
In practical terms, this means you can weld anklets, necklaces, and body chains on any client in any position without pulling your machine to the edge of the table or asking your client to contort themselves. The stylus is available in five colors — Classic Black (standard), Electric Blue, PJ Pink, Very Violet, and Antique Bronze — at a $50 upgrade fee.
Every previous generation of pulse arc welder had ports on the back or sides. The Orion mPulse® moved the stylus and grounding ports to the front of the unit — which sounds like a small thing until you're mid-appointment at a busy market and need to swap connections quickly.
Front-facing ports also mean cleaner cable management on your table, which matters when you're presenting a professional setup to clients and onlookers. Combined with the built-in power supply (no external power brick required), the mPulse takes up less space and creates less visual clutter than any previous generation of the machine.

The Orion mPulse® can be oriented horizontally or vertically, giving you control over its footprint to match whatever table, bench, or event setup you're working with. This flexibility matters when you're squeezing into a 6-foot vendor space at a market alongside your chain display, display case, and argon tank.
The machine weighs 4 lbs and has a footprint of 18.7 × 18.3 × 10.4 cm — compact enough for a pop-up, solid enough for a permanent studio setup.
The Orion mPulse® is NRTL, ETL, and CE certified, with ETL certification covering ASME, ASTM, ANSI, CSA, NFPA, NOM, NSF, and UL testing standards. These are third-party certifications that verify the machine meets rigorous electrical and safety requirements — not just manufacturer claims.
The mPulse is manufactured in the United States by Sunstone Engineering, an ISO 9001–certified company with nearly 20 years of precision micro welding experience. When you see the welder you receive, you'll notice the quality immediately: the fit of the housing, the feel of the touchscreen, the weight and balance of the stylus. This is what nearly two decades of engineering refinement looks like.
Eye protection (ADL or PJ Scope) is available separately and compatible with all Sunstone optic options.

As an authorized Sunstone reseller, we carry the same welder with the same full manufacturer warranty. Here's what you get on top of that:
75-day returns. Sunstone's return policy is 30 days and includes a restocking fee. Ours is 75 days, no runaround. A $2,999 purchase deserves more than a month to decide — especially when you're learning a new machine.
Expert USA-based technical support. Our team knows the Orion mPulse® deeply. When you have a question about Tru-Fire settings, energy calibration for a new chain type, argon flow, or anything else, real knowledgeable help is available immediately.
Dual lines of support. You have direct access to our expert team and to Sunstone's manufacturer support simultaneously — two independent lines of help, not one.
We specialize in this. Permanent jewelry equipment is our world. The person you reach when you contact us knows what they're talking about.
Who is the Orion mPulse® designed for? The mPulse is designed for permanent jewelry artists who are working seriously — whether that means running busy pop-up events, operating a studio, or expanding into high-volume appointment booking. It's also an excellent choice for experienced artists who started on a Zapp or Zapp Plus® 2 and are ready to upgrade to a machine that matches their skill level and business volume. It can absolutely be used by beginners who want to start at the top of the range, but it's particularly valuable for artists who are welding frequently and want the consistency and precision that Tru-Fire Technology® provides.
What exactly is Tru-Fire Technology® and why does it matter? Tru-Fire Technology® is proprietary software built into the Orion mPulse® that monitors electrode-to-metal ground contact at the moment of firing and automatically adjusts energy delivery to compensate for inconsistencies. In plain terms: the machine senses when contact is imperfect and fires anyway — cleanly, reliably, without a misfire. This is most noticeable at low energy levels during fine chain and jump ring welding, which is exactly where consistency matters most. No other permanent jewelry welder has this feature.
What is the Dual Zone Power Range™ and how is it different from other welders? The Dual Zone Power Range™ means the mPulse adjusts power in 0.5-Joule increments from 1–15 Joules, and in full 1-Joule increments from 16–30 Joules. The Zapp Plus® 2, by comparison, uses 1-Joule increments throughout its entire range. That half-Joule precision in the 1–15 Joule zone — where virtually all fine chain welding happens — gives you meaningfully finer control over weld quality on delicate metals. If you're working with fine gold-filled or sterling silver chain, that level of precision is noticeable in the finished weld.
Does the Orion mPulse® come with an eye protection lens (ADL)? No — eye protection is sold separately. The mPulse is compatible with all Sunstone optic options: the Basic ADL, the Upgraded ADL with Clear Screen, the PJ Scope (5x optics), and the 5x Arm Microscope. We can help you select the right optic for your setup — contact our team.
What stylus colors are available? The mPulse comes with Classic Black as standard. For a $50 upgrade fee (which replaces the black stylus), you can select Electric Blue, PJ Pink, Very Violet, or Antique Bronze. Stylus color selections are made at checkout.
Can I customize the appearance of the mPulse? Yes. The mPulse supports custom vinyl skins on its side panels, available through Sunstone. You can also choose from 14 different software backgrounds on the touchscreen display — so both the exterior and the screen can be personalized to match your brand or aesthetic.
Does the mPulse work with argon gas? Yes. The mPulse includes a shielding gas hose and is fully argon-compatible. Argon shielding significantly improves weld cleanliness and reduces oxidation, particularly on gold-filled and sterling silver chain. Argon tanks are sold separately — the Sunstone Argon Mini is a popular choice for pop-ups and remote events due to its compact size.
Can the mPulse be used with a battery power supply for pop-ups? Yes. The mPulse is compatible with a Goal Zero power supply for ultra-mobile setups where wall power is unavailable. This makes it a viable option for outdoor markets, remote events, or any venue without convenient outlet access.
Is the 3-year warranty valid when I buy through The Maker's Chest? Yes. As an authorized Sunstone reseller, the full 3-year manufacturer's warranty applies to every unit we sell — the same coverage as buying directly from Sunstone. The optional Sunstone Circle "forever warranty" VIP protection plan is also available at checkout for extended coverage and priority service.
What is your return policy? We offer a 75-day return window — more than twice Sunstone's standard 30-day policy, which also carries a restocking fee. If the Orion mPulse® isn't the right fit for your business within 75 days of purchase, contact our team and we will work with you to make it right.
Is the Orion mPulse® safe for client-facing permanent jewelry work? Yes. The mPulse is NRTL, ETL, and CE certified to rigorous safety standards, and manufactured in the USA under ISO 9001–certified quality controls. Standard safety practice includes using a leather safety patch between the chain and your client's skin during welding and following the safety guidelines in the included user's guide. The mPulse's front-facing ports and built-in power supply also reduce cable clutter at your workspace, contributing to a safer and more organized setup overall.
Can I upgrade from a Zapp or Zapp Plus® 2 to the mPulse later? Absolutely. Many artists start on a Zapp or Zapp Plus® 2 and upgrade to the mPulse as their business volume grows. Your existing tools, chain, and accessories all remain compatible — you're only replacing the welder itself. The 72.75" Orion Stylus that ships with the mPulse is longer than the Zapp Plus® 2's 72" stylus, and the front-facing port layout means you'll need to adjust how you route your cables, but the setup transition is straightforward.
