Why Handheld Fiber Laser Welding Changes the Shop Workflow

Traditional MIG and TIG welding are proven processes — but they have real limitations for production environments where speed, heat management, and finish quality all matter simultaneously.

Fiber laser welding addresses those limitations directly:

Less heat input. The concentrated fiber laser beam creates a smaller, more focused weld pool than MIG or TIG at equivalent metal thickness — resulting in less heat-affected area and significantly reduced material deformation. For stainless steel fabrication where warp control matters, or for thinner-gauge assemblies where distortion is a production problem, this is the most immediate practical advantage.

Faster welding speed. Handheld fiber laser welding completes many standard weld joints significantly faster than conventional processes — particularly on continuous seams, cabinet and frame assemblies, and sheet metal work.

Better weld appearance. Fiber laser welds produce narrow, smooth seam profiles with minimal spatter — reducing or eliminating the grinding and polishing steps that TIG and MIG welds typically require.

Cleaning and cutting from the same gun. Switching from welding to weld-joint cleaning or auxiliary cutting is a nozzle swap — not a separate machine, not a separate process step.

The OMTech 1500W is positioned as a high-productivity alternative to traditional TIG and MIG workflows.

3-in-1 Functionality — What Each Mode Actually Does

The OMTech 1500W ships with 20 nozzles covering all three operating modes:

Welding: The primary function — producing clean, strong welds on stainless steel (up to 4mm), carbon steel (up to 4mm), galvanized/zinc plates (up to 4mm), and aluminum (up to 2mm). Four welding nozzle types (AS-12, BS-16, CS-12, FS-16) handle different joint geometries and welding approaches. Two additional no-wire-feed welding nozzles handle applications where filler wire isn't required.

Weld cleaning: After welding, weld joints on stainless steel often show oxidation marks and heat tinting that require removal for appearance or corrosion resistance. The included cleaning nozzle uses the same fiber laser — at different parameters — to clean and brighten the weld zone without mechanical grinding or chemical treatment.

Auxiliary cutting: Two cutting nozzles (2.0) support light-duty metal cutting tasks — trimming, slotting, and cutting thin material where the full setup of a separate laser cutter isn't practical.

The ability to handle all three workflows from a single handheld system eliminates the tool changes, workflow interruptions, and equipment sprawl that conventional multi-step metal finishing requires.

Wire Feeder + Touchscreen — Production-Ready Controls

Automatic wire feeder: Supports 0.8–1.2mm welding wire — the standard diameter range for most production metal welding applications. The wire feeder handles consistent feed rate throughout the weld without operator attention, maintaining weld quality across long seams and repetitive joints.

Touchscreen on the main machine body: Full parameter control — laser power, frequency, wire feed speed, pulse settings, and operating mode. Up to 50 working parameter sets can be stored and recalled — allowing operators to dial in settings for specific materials and joint types once, then recall them instantly for repeat jobs.

Touchscreen on the handheld gun: Real-time monitoring and quick parameter adjustment at the welding position — without returning to the main machine body between adjustments. For production operators moving the gun across a large workpiece or a series of assemblies, this means parameter tweaks happen without interrupting the workflow.

Materials and Welding Thickness

Stainless steel: Up to 4mm in a single pass under optimal conditions with argon shielding gas.

Carbon steel: Up to 4mm — nitrogen is sometimes used as shielding gas for carbon steel fabrication alongside argon.

Galvanized / zinc-coated steel: Up to 4mm — the laser welding process handles galvanized coatings more effectively than conventional welding processes, which can struggle with zinc outgassing.

Aluminum: Up to 2mm — the more reflective nature of aluminum requires careful parameter management; argon shielding gas is standard for aluminum applications.

Brass and highly reflective metals: The page notes compatibility — exercise caution and proper parameter configuration for high-reflectivity materials.

Shielding gas: Required during welding for all materials to protect the weld pool and maintain finish quality. Argon is the standard recommendation for stainless, aluminum, and copper. Nitrogen is sometimes used for carbon steel. You supply the shielding gas from standard industrial cylinders.

Built-In Safety Systems — For a Machine Running at 1500W

Operating a 1500W fiber laser system requires proper safety infrastructure. The FC-22 builds several protection layers into the machine:

Ground wire protection: The machine is designed not to emit laser light unless properly grounded to the work platform — a foundational protection against unintended laser activation.

Emergency stop button: Immediate power cutoff when activated.

Low-voltage, temperature, and short-circuit protection: Automatic protective responses when operating parameters fall outside safe ranges.

Buzzer alarm system: Audible alerts for pressure, temperature, and system status events.

Oil-water separator: Protects the focusing lens from oil and impurities in the cooling or shielding gas circuits.

Required PPE: Operators must use wavelength-specific laser safety glasses and full welding protective gear in a designated laser-safe workspace. A welding helmet, welding gloves, and safety glasses are all included in the package.

Water Cooling + 24-Hour Continuous Operation

The OMTech 1500W uses a water-cooling system for the fiber laser source — maintaining the thermal stability required for sustained high-power operation. The system is rated for 24-hour continuous operating time, making it appropriate for production environments where the welder runs throughout full shifts rather than occasional use.

Operating temperature range: 41–113°F (5–45°C) — broad enough for most shop environments.

Machine body: Compact 38" × 22" × 38" footprint with three-sided handles for workshop positioning and movement. The separate handheld laser module weighs 62 lbs. ± 4 lbs. — the module that travels to the weld position.

What's Included — Ready for Production

The package includes everything required to begin welding immediately:

Welding machine, welding gun, automatic wire feeder, welding helmet, welding gloves, safety glasses, wire feeder cable, RS232 data cables, wire feed tube, gas pipe, gas pressure gauge, 20 protective lenses, focusing lens, collimating lens, reflective mirror, 20 welding/cleaning/cutting nozzles, welding wire feed rolls, tool box, wrenches, and user manual.

As soon as you place an order with us you'll receive an order confirmation email, and we'll get working to have your order dispatched as soon as we can.

Typically, we'll dispatch your order within 1 business day, however this can vary depending on the product and our warehouses, so please allow up to 3 business days.

Once your order has dispatched from our warehouse, you'll receive shipping confirmation within 24 hours of your order leaving our warehouse.

General Delivery Timeframes
Delivery timeframes will vary dependent on your location and the items you've ordered.

In general, these are the delivery timeframes you can expect:

  • 1-7 Business Days - Delivery within the contiguous United States

The above is intended to be used as a guide, and may not apply in all cases. Some products may have specific 'Delivery Timeframe' information, which can be found on its own tab, or on the main 'Description' tab of the product.

Home Delivery (Bulky Items)

  • This service is generally for products over 40kg in weight, as it is a requirement for these products to be palletised for delivery.
  • This service utilises power tailgates with two-man crews or crane trucks when required and this is included in the quoted price.
  • The receiver will be contacted prior to delivery to arrange a suitable delivery date and time. Deliveries are scheduled for either an AM or PM slot on any given day.
  • Delivery is to front car port, driveway, doorstep or wherever practical depending upon site access. Drivers are not permitted to move item(s) within the residence or around the property due to OHS reasons.
  • This service assumes reasonable and safe access to the site is available. Overhanging trees, steep driveways, unsealed driveways, narrow driveways or streets or an unforeseen obstruction may deem the delivery unavailable.
  • If your delivery address is in a regional or remote location, we recommend shipping to the nearest depot as the most affordable option.

Other Terms & Conditions

If you happen to miss the delivery, you will be required to pick up your item(s) from the freight company's depot. Re-delivery can be arranged to your home, however this will incur extra costs.

We can't advise on the exact time and day the delivery will occur as this is not within our control, however you will be emailed the tracking details where you will be able to contact the freight company for more accurate timeframes.

It is your responsibility to advise us if:

  • someone will be available to sign for delivery.
  • there's somewhere safe the item can be left if no one will be home.
  • if the address is a business address, as we will require the business hours of the business and name of the building.
  • you notice any damage. If so, you should make note of it when signing for delivery or do not agree to accept the delivery. If you do accept delivery you are required to immediately take photos using your smart phone or camera of the damaged packaging or products inside the packaging. If your item(s) do arrived damaged please send photos to support@themakerschest.com, then visit our returns page and lodge your return claim online.
