Description

Your Welding Table and Your Fume Extractor. One Machine. One Footprint.

The Fume Dog Bulldog-DDT is a downdraft welding, grinding, and fabrication table with industrial-grade fume extraction built directly into the work surface โ€” no arm to position, no separate unit taking up floor space, no fumes rising into your breathing zone. At 400 FPM capture velocity across a 36" ร— 42" perforated steel tabletop, it pulls smoke, particulates, and gases downward through the surface the moment they're generated, before they have a chance to travel toward the operator.ย

[Return Policy exception:ย Fume Dog products are an exception to The Maker's Chest standard returns policy, and all sales are final. However, this does not mean we do not have confidence in these products - in fact, the Fume Dog products come with a 10-year warranty on all major structural components.]

Why Downdraft Changes the Fume Control Equation

Every fume extraction approach makes a tradeoff between capture efficiency and operator freedom. Articulating arm extractors require the welder to position and maintain the hood near the weld โ€” which works well but demands constant awareness. Ambient ventilation improves overall air quality but does nothing about the fume cloud rising directly in front of the welder's face before it disperses.

A downdraft table eliminates both problems. Fumes are pulled downward through the work surface the instant they're generated โ€” before they ever rise toward the operator's breathing zone. There's nothing to position, nothing to adjust, and no hood competing for space around the workpiece.

For grinding, plasma cutting, and short-arc welding where fume rises quickly in a concentrated area, downdraft capture is the most effective approach available. The welder focuses on the work; the table handles the air.

400 FPM Across the Entire Work Surface

400 feet per minute capture velocity is the standard benchmark for effective downdraft extraction in welding environments. At that velocity, the table maintains enough draw to capture fumes from typical welding and grinding operations before they escape upward past the workpiece.

The key distinction is that this velocity is maintained across the full 36" ร— 42" perforated table surface โ€” not just at a single hood or inlet point. Whether you're welding in the center of the table or grinding at the edge, the capture velocity is consistent across the work area. A 1.5 HP motor on 120V / 1-phase power drives the extraction system โ€” standard shop outlet power, no special electrical infrastructure required.

The Air Stream Filter Cleaner: Why Filter Costs Don't Have to Be Brutal

One of the least advertised costs of owning a fume extractor is the ongoing filter replacement expense. Filters in a busy welding shop load up quickly, and if you're doing full filter replacements on a conventional schedule, the cost adds up fast across a year of production.

The Bulldog-DDT uses Fume Dog's Air Stream Filter Cleaning System, which uses a controlled air stream to dislodge captured particulate from the filter media on a regular basis โ€” extending filter life by 5 to 6 times compared to conventional filter designs.

That's not just a maintenance convenience. For a shop running one to two shifts daily, it directly translates to significantly lower annual filter operating costs and fewer production interruptions for filter service.

The multi-stage filtration system combines a HEPA-grade primary filter for fine metal particulates (including hexavalent chromium from stainless steel welding) with an activated carbon stage for gases, ozone, and odors.

Built Like a Welding Table. Because It Is One.

The Bulldog-DDT isn't a fume extractor with a shelf bolted on top. It's an all-steel, powder-coated welding and fabrication table built to take direct work contact, grinding sparks, heat, and physical load โ€” with the extraction system integrated beneath.

The perforated steel work surface is the same type used on professional fabrication tables โ€” durable enough for clamping, grinding, and heavy part placement. The removable side and back walls contain fumes and improve directional capture during grinding and cutting operations. Hinged panels accommodate larger parts that extend beyond the table's normal footprint, so you're not limited to what fits inside the enclosure.

The integrated light kit provides direct illumination of the work surface โ€” genuinely useful for detail welding and precise grinding where visibility matters. An integrated tool tray keeps your frequently used tools organized and within reach.

Heavy-duty casters are included โ€” the table rolls to where it's needed and locks in place for production use.

Three Machines in One โ€” If You Need Them

The optional 3-in-1 conversion kit (select from the dropdown at checkout) converts the Bulldog-DDT into two additional extraction configurations without purchasing a separate machine:

Portable Fume Extractor with Snorkel Arm โ€” converts the unit to a roll-around fume extractor with an articulating arm for source capture during welding away from the table surface.

Wall-Mounted Fume Extractor โ€” the same motor and filtration unit mounts to the wall as a fixed extraction system, freeing up floor space entirely when the downdraft table function isn't needed.

All three conversions are achieved with no additional accessories beyond the included kit โ€” out of the box, ready to reconfigure. For shops that need flexibility as their layout or workflow evolves, this is a machine that adapts rather than a machine that needs to be replaced.

The FD-DDT-321 configuration (upgraded package) adds a fume arm to the base unit, giving you simultaneous downdraft surface capture plus localized source capture with the arm โ€” useful for taller workpieces or welding positions where the arm provides additional capture coverage that the table surface alone doesn't reach.

The Maker's Chest Difference

Frequently Asked Questions about Fume Dog Downdraft Table Fume Extractor

Q: What's the difference between the base model (FD-DDT-23) and the upgraded model (FD-DDT-321)?

A: Theย FD-DDT-23 is the base downdraft table with all core features: perforated steel work surface, Air Stream Filter Cleaner, integrated light kit, removable side and back walls, casters, and tool tray. The optional 3-in-1 conversion kit (portable or wall mount) can be added from the dropdown. The FD-DDT-321 includes everything in the base model plus a dedicated fume arm for additional localized source capture โ€” useful for taller workpieces or positions where the table's downdraft capture alone doesn't fully cover the fume source. If you weld or grind at varying heights above the table surface, the 321 configuration is worth considering.

Q: What processes is the Bulldog-DDT designed for?

A: The Bulldog-DDT is designed forย Stick, MIG, and TIG welding, grinding, plasma cutting, and general fabrication at one to two shifts per day. Downdraft capture is particularly effective for grinding and cutting operations that generate large volumes of sparks and fine particulate at the table surface. For heavy continuous MIG production welding, the downdraft table can be combined with the fume arm (FD-DDT-321) for maximum capture efficiency.

Q: How does downdraft extraction compare to an articulating arm extractor for welding?

A: Both approaches capture fumes at the source โ€” the difference is in how. An articulating arm requires the welder to position and maintain the hood near the weld, which works well but needs attention. A downdraft table pulls fumes downward through the work surface automatically across the entire table area, with no positioning required from the operator. Downdraft is generally more effective forย grinding, cutting, and work that moves across the table surface. For welding tall assemblies or work that extends significantly above the table, an arm extractor (or the FD-DDT-321's combined arm + downdraft) provides better coverage.

Q: What is the Air Stream Filter Cleaning System and how much does it save?

A: The Air Stream Filter Cleaner uses a controlled air stream to periodically dislodge accumulated particulate from the filter media โ€” actively extending filter life rather than waiting until the filter is fully loaded. Fume Dog rates this system atย 5 to 6 times the filter life of conventional non-cleaning designs. For a shop running one to two shifts daily, this translates directly to fewer annual filter replacements, lower operating costs, and fewer production interruptions for filter service.

Q: What is the 3-in-1 conversion and how does it work?

A: Selecting the "3-in-1 Downdraft Table" option at checkout includes the conversion kit that allows you to reconfigure the unit โ€” without additional accessories โ€” into either aย portable fume extractor with snorkel arm (on casters, for source capture away from the table) or a wall-mounted extraction unit. All conversion hardware is included in the kit. The conversion doesn't require tools or modifications to the machine itself.

Q: Does it require ducting?

A: No. The Bulldog-DDT is aย filtered recirculating system โ€” it processes extracted air through the multi-stage HEPA and carbon filter stack and returns clean air to the shop. No ducting to the exterior is required, no wall penetrations needed. Connect power, and it's operational.

Q: What power does it require?

A:ย 120V, single-phase โ€” standard shop outlet power. The 1.5 HP motor is appropriate for a standard 20A circuit. The unit does not require 220V or three-phase power.

Q: Can I weld stainless steel on this table safely?

A: Yes. The HEPA-grade primary filter captures fine metal particulates โ€” includingย hexavalent chromium generated when welding stainless steel โ€” at the required efficiency level. The activated carbon stage additionally handles the gases associated with stainless welding. Ensure your workpiece fits within the table's capture zone for maximum effectiveness.

Q: Is the work surface durable enough for regular grinding?

A: Yes. Theย heavy-duty perforated steel table surface is built for direct work contact, clamping, grinding, and heavy part placement. Grinding sparks and heat are daily realities for this table โ€” the steel surface and powder-coated steel housing are designed for that environment. The removable side and back walls provide additional protection during grinding operations and improve directional fume capture.

Q: What is the Returns Policy on the Fume Dog?

A: Given the nature of how a fume extractor is used, it is no longer a "new" product after first use, given contaminants which enter the filtration system. As such, Fume Dog products are an exception to The Maker's Chest returns policy, and all sales are final.

However, this does not mean we do not have confidence in these products - in fact, the Fume Dog products come with a 10-year warranty on the major structural components of the goods, provided the products are properly installed, maintained, and operated under normal conditions. If any defects appear under normal usage, Fume Dog will repair or replace your product at no cost to you, within ten years of its original purchase.ย

Q: Why buy from The Maker's Chest instead of directly from Fume Dog?

A:ย Our USA-based support team is reachable by phone and email, knowledgeable about this product, and focused on making sure the machine works for your application โ€” not just processing your transaction. If a question comes up after delivery, we're the call you want to have available.
