The 55W CO2 source cuts wood, acrylic in every color, fabric, leather, paper, cork and foam, and engraves glass, ceramic, stone, bamboo, coated metals and anodised aluminium. It marks bare stainless steel only after the surface is coated.
The xTool P2 was the best-selling desktop CO2 laser on Amazon from 2022 to 2024, and the P2S is the refined version: a stronger exhaust fan, a dual-cylinder air pump, an easier optical path to maintain and a faster X-axis. If you have been choosing between a diode laser that cannot touch clear acrylic and an industrial tube machine that will not fit your bench, the P2S sits in the gap with industrial cutting power at a desktop price.

At 55W, the P2S cuts 20 mm acrylic and 18 mm black walnut in a single pass, where a typical 40W diode laser needs repeated passes and cannot cut clear acrylic at all, because blue diode light passes through transparent material instead of being absorbed. xTool's lab data puts the P2S at up to 5 times faster than a 40W diode on comparable cuts, and 3 mm basswood cuts at 35 mm/s. In practice that means a thick clear acrylic sign or a solid-wood plaque comes off the bed finished, with cleaner edges than a charred multi-pass cut.

The P2S engraves at up to 600 mm/s with X-axis acceleration of 6,400 mm/s², and xTool states the redesigned X-axis cuts engraving time by about 40% against the original P2. Raster engraving is dominated by how fast the head can reverse at the end of each line, so acceleration matters more than top speed, and it shows up on tumbler wraps, photo engravings and batches of name tags. Faster jobs mean more finished pieces per day from the same machine.

Two 16MP cameras work together: a panoramic camera sees the whole bed and a close-range camera gives sharper detail on small pieces, so you drag your design onto a live image of the material. Positioning is rated at 0.3 mm. A LiDAR ranging system measures the surface and sets focus automatically, which removes the manual height measuring that causes most beginner mistakes. You place, press start and move on, rather than burning a scrap piece first.

AutoPassthrough™ lets the P2S process stock longer than its 23.6" bed through front and rear slots, and the optional Automatic Conveyor Feeder advances material up to 118" long and 0.55" thick with path planning. That is how a banner-length sign, a run of long bookmarks or a batch of small blanks gets cut without you standing at the machine. The conveyor needs the optional riser base.

New on the P2S, 3D Curve™ engraving follows the contour of a curved surface so the design stays sharp across a bottle, a mug or a rounded ornament instead of blurring where the surface falls away. Add the RA3 rotary (requires the riser base) and you can wrap designs around tumblers, rings and ornaments, from 0 to 180 mm in diameter. Drinkware is one of the highest-margin items a small laser business sells.
The P2S ships with a 145 CFM built-in exhaust fan and a dual-cylinder air pump that pushes smoke out through a duct to a window and keeps cuts cleaner. xTool also redesigned the optical path with easier access points, so routine mirror and lens cleaning takes minutes rather than hours. For ductless setups, the SafetyPro™ AP2 air purifier filters the exhaust instead.

The enclosed body uses a light-filtering lid with an automatic lock, an emergency stop button and AI fire detection that xTool says does not mistake sunlight, flame-shaped objects or smoke for a fire. A warning system also monitors motherboard temperature, cooling status and water level. The P2S is a Class 4 laser product, so it needs sensible placement and, for classrooms, an adult-supervised setup.

P2S Standalone: the laser itself, for owners who already have a bench, extraction and accessories.
P2S Versatile Bundle: adds the Automatic Conveyor Feeder (39"), the Riser Base and the RA3 rotary attachment, the three upgrades most owners end up buying.
P2S All-in-one Bundle: everything in the Versatile Bundle plus the SafetyPro™ AP2 air purifier for filtered, ductless operation.
Q: What is the difference between the xTool P2S and the original P2?
A: The P2S keeps the 55W tube and 23.6" × 12" bed, and adds a stronger exhaust fan, dual-cylinder air assist, easier optical-path maintenance, a faster X-axis (about 40% quicker engraving), 3D Curve engraving and Batch Processing 2.0.
Q: What materials can the P2S cut and engrave?
A: It cuts wood, acrylic in every color including clear, fabric, leather, paper, cork and foam, and engraves glass, ceramic, stone, bamboo, coated metal and anodised aluminium. It cannot cut metal or glass.
Q: How thick can it cut?
A: Up to 20 mm acrylic and 18 mm solid wood such as black walnut in one pass. xTool advises keeping plywood to about 12 mm, because the glue layers in plywood cut less cleanly than solid wood. For thicker or denser stock, plan on slower speeds or more than one pass, and ask us about your specific material.
Q: Can it engrave bare stainless steel?
A: Not directly. CO2 wavelength reflects off bare metal, so stainless steel needs a marking coating first. Coated and anodised metals engrave without one. For direct bare-metal work a fiber laser is the better tool, and we can recommend one if metal is central to what you sell.
Q: Why choose CO2 over a diode laser?
A: CO2 absorbs well in clear and colored acrylic, glass and organic materials, and cuts far faster. xTool measures 3 mm basswood at 35 mm/s, about 3 times faster than a 40W diode, and a diode cannot cut clear acrylic at all. A diode is smaller and cheaper, so it suits light engraving; choose CO2 when you cut, sell acrylic or run batches.
Q: Does it work with LightBurn?
A: Yes, but the camera and autofocus functions are not supported in LightBurn, so you frame the job and enter material thickness manually. xTool Studio gives you the full camera and autofocus workflow, so most owners use it unless they have a LightBurn-based process they want to keep.
Q: Do I need a riser base?
A: Only for the RA3 rotary, the conveyor feeder and tall objects. The riser lifts the working height to 215 mm (8.46"). Without it, standard material height is 64 mm with the tray or 71 mm without. It is included in the Versatile and All-in-one bundles, so choose one of those if you know you want the rotary or conveyor.
Q: Do I need ventilation or an air purifier?
A: Yes. Cutting and engraving wood, acrylic and leather produces smoke and fumes. The P2S has a 145 CFM built-in exhaust fan that vents through a duct to a window. If you cannot duct outside, use a filtered purifier; the SafetyPro AP2 is included in the All-in-one Bundle.
Q: Is it safe for a classroom or home workshop?
A: The P2S is enclosed, with a light-filtering lid, an automatic lid lock, an emergency stop and AI fire detection, but it is a Class 4 laser product, which is a higher rating than a Class 1 machine. Place it away from flammable clutter, never leave it running unattended on flammable material, and in a classroom plan for adult supervision. If you want a Class 1 rating, ask us about the xTool P3.
Q: How hard is setup?
A: Most owners finish unboxing, plugging in and first setup in about 20 minutes, because the machine ships pre-assembled with camera positioning and autofocus already built in. Allow extra time if you are adding a duct, the riser base or a rotary. At 99 lb (45 kg), it is a two-person lift.
Q: What power does it need?
A: 100–120 V AC at 50/60 Hz, with a maximum input of 700 W, so a standard North American household outlet is sufficient. Keep it off a circuit shared with other high-draw equipment.
Q: Is the warranty valid if I buy from The Maker's Chest?
A: Yes. We are an authorized xTool dealer, so the 1-year manufacturer warranty is identical to buying direct, with our US support alongside xTool's. Consumables and shipping are excluded.
Q: What is your return policy?
A: 75 days from the ship date for a full refund in like-new condition, less shipping and handling. That gives you time to run your real materials through it before you decide.
