Fiber lasers melt plastics and crack glass. CO2 lasers can't mark bare metal and struggle with fine detail. If your work spans drinkware, electronics housings, packaging and awards, you end up needing a laser that doesn't depend on heat to leave a mark. The BWM 5W JPT UV Laser Engraver is that tool, in the simplest possible package: air-cooled, desktop-sized and shipped by air to your door in around 7 business days.

BWM 5W JPT UV laser engraver with air-cooled split marking system

355 nm Cold Marking: Why UV Works Where Other Lasers Don't

A UV laser works differently from fiber and CO2 lasers. Its 355 nm wavelength is absorbed by almost every material, and each photon carries enough energy to break chemical bonds directly. That's why UV is called "cold marking": instead of melting or burning the surface, it changes it with very little heat. The result is crisp, high-contrast marks on materials that scorch, melt or crack under other lasers.

For you, that means frosted marks on wine glasses and crystal, clean white-to-dark contrast on plastics without bubbling, and precise marks on heat-sensitive electronics where a fiber laser could damage the part.

Air-Cooled JPT Source: No Chiller, No Plumbing

Most UV lasers above 5W need a water chiller. The BWM 5W's JPT UV source is air-cooled, so there's nothing to fill, drain or maintain, and no extra footprint on your bench. The source delivers over 5W at 50 kHz with a pulse duration under 18 ns and a pulse repetition rate from 20 to 150 kHz. The machine draws 800W in operation.

TEM00 Beam Quality for 0.01 mm Detail

The source produces a TEM00 beam with M² of 1.2, close to a perfect Gaussian spot. A tight, round spot means small text, fine lines and high-resolution images stay sharp. BWM rates marking precision at 0.01 mm and beam pointing stability at 25 μrad, which keeps repeat marks landing in the same place, part after part.

7,000 mm/s Galvo Marking with Dual Red-Light Focusing

An Ouya galvo head steers the beam at up to 7,000 mm/s. Two red-light pointers help you set focus: when the dots meet, you're at the right height. The marking head rides on a manual lift column so you can raise it for tall bottles or lower it for flat parts. The standard marking area is 110 x 110 mm, with optional lenses up to 300 x 300 mm.

Original JCZ Controller with EZCAD2, LightBurn Compatible

BWM uses an original Beijing JCZ control card with EZCAD2, the standard galvo software for Windows. The machine is also LightBurn compatible if you prefer LightBurn's layer-based workflow or need Mac support. The LightBurn galvo license is sold separately.

Split Design with Built-In Safety Controls

The machine uses a separate control cabinet with carry handles, an emergency stop, and individual key switches for the scan head and UV laser. BWM includes a foot pedal for hands-free firing, fixture bars for positioning parts, tools, and one pair of laser safety goggles. BWM states its machines comply with FDA and CE standards.

Who the BWM 5W UV Is Built For

Frequently Asked Questions about the BWM 5W JPT UV Laser Engraver

Q: What's the difference between a UV laser and a fiber laser?

A: A fiber laser (1064 nm) is best for bare metals and deep engraving. A UV laser (355 nm) marks with very little heat, so it's better on glass, plastics, electronics and other heat-sensitive materials, and it gives cleaner marks on white and light-colored plastics. UV can mark metal surfaces, but it can't engrave metal deeply.

Q: What materials can the BWM 5W UV laser mark?

A: It marks glass and crystal, most plastics (polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polycarbonate, acrylic, acetal, nylon, ABS), wood and MDF, leather, paper, rubber, fabric, stone, ceramics, and the surface of metals such as stainless steel, aluminum, brass, silver, gold and titanium.

Q: Can a UV laser engrave glass without cracking it?

A: Yes. UV is the most common laser choice for glass because its cold marking process creates a fine frosted mark with minimal heat stress. Results still depend on the glass type and settings, so test on a sample piece first.

Q: Can it deep engrave metal?

A: No. UV lasers mark metal surfaces well for logos, serials and codes, but they aren't built for deep engraving. If depth on metal is your main job, a MOPA fiber laser is the better tool.

Q: Does the 5W UV laser need a water chiller?

A: No. The 5W JPT UV source is air-cooled with cooling built into the machine, so it runs without a chiller. It draws 800W and operates best at room temperatures between 10 and 35°C.

Q: Does it work with LightBurn?

A: Yes. It ships with EZCAD2 on an original JCZ control card and is compatible with LightBurn's galvo module. The LightBurn license is sold separately. Don't install EZCAD2 and LightBurn drivers on the same computer at the same time.

Q: Is a UV laser safe to use in a small shop?

A: It's an open galvo laser, so everyone in the room needs UV-rated laser safety glasses (one pair is included), and you should use a fume extractor when marking plastics. The control cabinet has an emergency stop and key switches for the scan head and laser, and BWM states its machines comply with FDA and CE standards.

Q: How fast does it ship, and are there import fees?

A: BWM ships by FedEx air freight, typically arriving in around 7 business days. Duties, taxes and customs fees are included in the $5,390 price.

Q: What does the warranty cover, and can I return it?

A: BWM provides a 3-year warranty on the complete machine plus lifetime technical support by phone, video or TeamViewer. BWM machines aren't covered by our standard return policy because they ship directly from the manufacturer. If a machine arrives with serious shipping damage, BWM covers freight both ways to repair or replace it.

Q: Why buy the BWM 5W UV laser from The Maker's Chest instead of directly from BWM?

A: You get the same factory-direct air shipping and warranty, plus a US-based team for pre-sale advice on UV versus fiber or CO2, setup help, and a point of contact during US business hours.

Home Delivery (Bulky Items)

  • This service utilises power tailgates with two-man crews or crane trucks when required and this is included in the quoted price.
  • The receiver will be contacted prior to delivery to arrange a suitable delivery date and time. Deliveries are scheduled for either an AM or PM slot on any given day.
  • Delivery is to front car port, driveway, doorstep or wherever practical depending upon site access. Drivers are not permitted to move item(s) within the residence or around the property due to OHS reasons.
  • This service assumes reasonable and safe access to the site is available. Overhanging trees, steep driveways, unsealed driveways, narrow driveways or streets or an unforeseen obstruction may deem the delivery unavailable.
  • If your delivery address is in a regional or remote location, we recommend shipping to the nearest depot as the most affordable option.

We can't advise on the exact time and day the delivery will occur as this is not within our control, however you will be emailed the tracking details where you will be able to contact the freight company for more accurate timeframes.

If you do accept delivery you are required to immediately take photos using your smart phone or camera of the damaged packaging or products inside the packaging.
