The missing piece is power: fiber laser cutting machines typically require 1,000W or 2,000W, whereas engraving machines are commonly in the 60W to 100W range — nowhere near enough to cut metal effectively unless you're willing to do hundreds or thousands of passes at low power. We often have to educate customers who call in expecting their entry-level fiber engraver to cut through metal."

"The kind of customer the FC-22 is usually suitable for is typically operating a metal fabrication shop, not just an engraving business," Nigam says. "These are shops that may already have an existing plasma cutter or CNC router in-house and are looking for the additional capability a fiber laser cutter can add."

"In practice, we haven't found too much overlap between the two types of customers," he adds — the FC-22's fabrication-shop buyers and OMTech's regular fiber-engraving customers are largely two distinct groups, not a spectrum with confused buyers in between.

Why the Price Gap Is So Large
