The Sunstone Orion 150x: Nearly Two Decades of Pulse Arc Welding Excellence, Redesigned from the Ground Up

Precision micro-welding for jewelry, dental, aerospace, and manufacturing — in a smarter, more intuitive package than anything Sunstone has made before. The Orion 150x delivers up to 150 joules of digitally controlled pulse arc energy, backed by Tru-Fire Technology® and a full 8" touchscreen interface built for the way professionals actually work.

What Is Pulse Arc Welding — and Why Do Professionals Choose It?

Pulse arc welding (also called micro TIG) uses a high-energy electrical arc — shielded by argon gas — to fuse metals at a precise, localized point. Unlike a torch, it delivers heat only where you need it, protecting surrounding stones, settings, and delicate components from thermal damage. Unlike a laser welder, it produces deeper weld penetration — creating a stronger metallurgical bond, particularly on reflective metals like silver where laser energy tends to scatter.

The result is a technology that jewelers, dental technicians, aerospace fabricators, and precision manufacturers have trusted for decades. The Orion 150x is the next generation of that technology — rebuilt from the ground up to be faster, smarter, and more consistent than any pulse arc welder Sunstone has made before.

150 Joules. Total Digital Control. Zero Analog Knobs.

The Orion 150x puts 1 to 150 joules of weld energy at your fingertips — adjustable in 0.2 joule increments — all controlled through an 8" color touchscreen display. There are no analog dials to fidget with, no imprecise settings to second-guess. Every parameter is set digitally, saved digitally, and recalled with a tap.

That range gives you the ability to:

  • Drop to fine, delicate settings for stone-adjacent repairs, thin wire work, and micro detail without risk of heat damage
  • Step up to full power for adding fill metal, joining larger sections, or working with thicker material that needs deeper penetration
  • Dial in weld spot sizes from approximately 0.5mm to 3.5mm depending on energy level — matching the weld footprint to the work

The 150x also supports weld speeds up to 2 welds per second for joint sealing and repetitive bonding operations, keeping production-pace work moving efficiently.

Tru-Fire Technology®: Consistent Arc Ignition, Every Time

Sunstone Orion 150x Pulse Arc Welder for Jewelry & Repair with digital display and 'orion 150x' branding on a white background

Misfires are one of the most frustrating realities of pulse arc welding at low energy settings. The arc fails to ignite cleanly, the weld doesn't happen, the operator tries again — wasting time and potentially marking the workpiece.

The Orion 150x eliminates this with Tru-Fire Technology®, Sunstone's proprietary arc ignition system. It detects electrode contact with the workpiece and delivers a controlled ignition pulse at exactly the right moment — producing a clean, consistent arc start regardless of energy level. You fire. It welds. Every time.

This is an exclusive Orion feature. You will not find it in any competing pulse arc welder.

WeldIQ™ and Smart Energy Release: Precision You Can Feel

Two additional Orion-exclusive technologies work behind the scenes on every weld:

WeldIQ™ is a digital dashboard that continuously fine-tunes energy delivery to the workpiece. Rather than simply releasing a set amount of stored energy, WeldIQ actively monitors and adjusts the weld to ensure the energy that reaches the work matches what was requested — for more consistent, predictable results across different materials and weld positions.

Smart Energy Release means the Orion 150x only delivers the energy you actually set. Many welders deliver more energy than dialed in — overheating the workpiece and stressing components. Smart Energy Release prevents this, keeping heat input lower, reducing component stress, and extending electrode life.

Agitation Control: Shaping the Weld Energy

Sunstone Orion 150x Pulse Arc Welder for Jewelry & Repair rear

The Orion 150x includes Sloped agitation — the ability to add energy peaks to the downslope of the weld current, which introduces additional heat and intensity at the end of the weld cycle. This has two practical effects:

Porosity removal — the additional energy helps drive out gas pockets that can form in the weld, resulting in a denser, stronger bond.

Deeper penetration — agitation focuses the electron stream, pushing energy deeper into the workpiece for applications where surface-level bonding isn't sufficient.

Agitation intensity is adjustable — Soft, Standard, or Fine — giving you control over how aggressively the energy is shaped for each application.

An Integrated Workstation, Not Just a Welder

The Orion 150x is designed as a complete, integrated bench tool — not a standalone box you have to configure around.

Touchscreen display, optics, articulating arm, and stylus are all integrated into a single unit that clamps to any bench or table. When you're done welding, the entire arm swings out of the way to open up your workspace. The power supply mounts separately — under your bench, or on a vertical surface — and accepts 3D-printed or aftermarket attachment bins, tool holders, and organizers so the bench stays clean.

5x premium microscope optics are built into the articulating arm, positioned directly over the weld point with a safety shutter that automatically protects your eyes when the arc fires. You see every detail of the work — wire thickness, prong tip geometry, porosity location — in crisp, illuminated detail before and after each weld.

Stylus-mounted energy adjustment buttons are a first for the Orion line. Two tactile buttons — one to increase energy, one to decrease — sit right at the stylus handle. You can adjust energy without looking away from the workpiece, keeping your focus on the job throughout.

Smartphone-Style Software Built for the Bench

The Orion 150x interface is designed the way professionals think about their workflow — customizable, quick to navigate, and built for daily use.

  • Pin your most-used features to the home screen — up to 3 widgets — so the controls you reach for constantly are always one tap away
  • Save weld schedules for recurring applications — ring sizing, prong repair, specific alloys — and recall them instantly
  • Access a full library of how-to and training videos directly from the interface, without leaving the machine or picking up a phone
  • 20+ language options for international teams and multilingual studios
  • Infinite background color customization — match the interface to your studio, your brand, or your mood
  • Software updatable via USB port on the back panel, ensuring the machine stays current as Sunstone releases improvements

What You Can Do With the Orion 150x

Pulse arc welding is the right technology for a broad range of precision metalworking applications:

Jewelry repair and fabrication — ring sizing, prong retipping, porosity filling, metal addition, chain repair, setting construction, and workpiece assembly across gold, silver, platinum, and base metals. The Orion 150x is trusted by James Avery, Zales, Pandora, and thousands of independent jewelers worldwide.

Dental lab work — crown and bridge repair, clasp welding, frame adjustments, and prosthetic component bonding in a lab environment where precision and material integrity are non-negotiable.

Aerospace and defense components — micro-scale joining of precision parts, sensor components, and specialty alloys where heat control and weld strength are critical.

Manufacturing and R&D — prototype assembly, fine wire bonding, component repair, and any bench-scale application requiring a controllable, repeatable micro-weld.

Orion 150x vs. Orion 200x: Choosing the Right Model

The Orion 150x and Orion 200x share the same physical footprint, the same 8" touchscreen interface, and the same Tru-Fire Technology® arc ignition system. Here's where they differ:

Orion 150x Orion 200x
Energy Range 1 – 150 joules 0.15 – 200 joules
Energy Adjustment Increment 0.2J 0.05J
Weld Spot Range ~0.5 – 3.5mm ~0.1 – 4.5mm
Weld Speed Up to 2/sec Up to 4/sec
Agitation Modes Sloped only Sloped, Sustained, Negative
Waveform Options Standard Triangle, Square, Standard
Home Screen Widgets 3 pinnable 6 pinnable

Choose the Orion 150x if: your work is primarily jewelry repair, ring sizing, prong retipping, and general bench work on precious and non-precious metals. The 150x covers the full range of everyday professional welding applications with excellent precision and control — at a meaningful price advantage over the 200x.

Choose the Orion 200x if: you need the finest possible weld spots (down to 0.1mm), the highest energy ceiling (200 joules), more granular energy increment control (0.05J vs. 0.2J), higher weld speed (4/sec), multiple agitation modes for complex porosity and penetration challenges, or advanced waveform selection for difficult alloys and demanding applications.

For most jewelers, dental technicians, and general repair professionals — the 150x is the right choice. For studios doing high-volume fine work, scientific applications, or advanced fabrication requiring maximum precision and energy range — the 200x is worth the step up.

Pulse Arc vs. Laser Welding: Do You Need Both?

This is one of the most common questions buyers ask — and there's a clear answer.

Pulse arc welders produce stronger welds on most metals because the arc penetrates deeper into the material, creating a more robust metallurgical bond. This is particularly pronounced on reflective metals like silver, where laser energy tends to scatter off the surface rather than penetrate cleanly.

Laser welders offer advantages in heat precision on extremely fine work, no electrode contact requirements, and the ability to weld through glass or transparent materials.

Many serious jewelers and fabricators operate both. But pulse arc welding delivers a faster return on investment — at a fraction of the cost of a comparable laser welder — and handles the vast majority of repair, assembly, and fabrication work professionals encounter daily. If you're starting with one, the Orion 150x is where to start.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is pulse arc welding and how is it different from a laser welder? Pulse arc welding uses a high-energy electrical arc — similar to a micro TIG process — to fuse metals at a precise, localized point. The arc is shielded by argon gas, which prevents oxidation at the weld site. Unlike a laser, the arc physically penetrates the metal, producing a deeper, stronger weld. Laser welders offer advantages in fine heat control and surface-level applications, but pulse arc produces stronger bonds on most metals and works especially well on reflective metals like silver where laser energy tends to scatter.

Can the Orion 150x weld silver? Yes — and it performs better on silver than a laser welder does. Silver's high reflectivity causes laser energy to scatter rather than penetrate, making laser welding on silver more difficult and inconsistent. Pulse arc technology is not affected by surface reflectivity, making the Orion 150x an excellent tool for fine silver and sterling silver work.

What metals can the Orion 150x weld? The Orion 150x works with virtually any metal: gold (all karats), silver, platinum, palladium, stainless steel, titanium, copper, and most base metals. Exotic and specialty alloys used in aerospace and medical applications are also weldable — contact our team if you're working with an unusual material.

Do I need argon gas to use the Orion 150x? Argon is not strictly required to operate the welder, but using it produces better, stronger welds by shielding the weld zone from atmospheric oxidation. The Orion 150x is argon-ready — you can connect a standard argon supply directly. For fine precious metal work, running with argon is strongly recommended.

How long does it take to learn to use the Orion 150x? The touchscreen interface is designed for fast learning. The library of built-in how-to and training videos, accessible directly from the machine, covers the fundamentals and common applications. Most professionals are making functional welds within their first session. Building precision and confidence on delicate or complex work takes more practice, as with any precision tool.

What is the difference between the Orion 150x and the older Orion 150s? The 150x is a complete redesign of the 150s, not an incremental update. The 150x adds the new 8" touchscreen interface, Tru-Fire Technology®, stylus-mounted energy adjustment buttons, WeldIQ™ energy management, Smart Energy Release, the updated agitation system, software customization, and the new articulating arm design. The 150s has been discontinued. If you're comparing the two, the 150x is materially more capable in every relevant area.

What is the difference between the Orion 150x and the Orion 200x? Both share the same physical design and core technology. The 200x adds more energy (up to 200J vs. 150J), finer energy adjustment increments (0.05J vs. 0.2J), a wider weld spot range (down to 0.1mm vs. 0.5mm), higher weld speed (4/sec vs. 2/sec), three agitation modes vs. one, advanced waveform options, and 6 pinnable home screen widgets vs. 3. For most jewelry and general repair professionals, the 150x is the right choice. The 200x is for buyers who need the highest energy ceiling and most granular control available.

What does the 3-year warranty cover? The 3-year manufacturer's warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship under normal operating conditions. The Orion 150x is also eligible for the Sunstone Circle protection plan, which extends warranty coverage and adds benefits including free shipping and complimentary loaner units.

What is your return policy? 75-day returns. If the Orion 150x doesn't work for your application or studio, reach out and we'll take care of you.
