The Sunstone CDSP: Micro Resistance Spot Welding with Precision You Can Measure

Designed for engineers, technicians, and manufacturers who need repeatable, controllable micro welds — every single time.

Sunstone CDSP: Micro Resistance Spot Welder

What Is a Capacitive Discharge (CD) Spot Welder — and Why Does It Matter?

Resistance welding at the micro scale demands consistency that conventional welding equipment simply cannot deliver. The Sunstone CDSP (Capacitive Discharge Single Pulse) welder solves this by storing a precise charge in internal capacitors and releasing it in a fast, controlled single pulse — independent of your facility's line voltage fluctuations.

The result? Repeatable weld energy, shot after shot. Whether you're welding delicate thermocouple junctions, crossing fine copper wires, or attaching strain gauges to substrates, the CDSP gives you the accuracy and consistency that production-grade work demands.

Key Features That Set the CDSP Apart

Refined control of weld energy — Energy is adjustable from as low as 0.1 Ws (watt seconds) all the way to your model's maximum capacity (100 Ws or 200 Ws). That range gives you fine-grain control whether you're welding microscopic wires or making stronger bond welds on sheet stock.

LCD display with exact energy read-out — No guessing, no analog dials. The LCD shows you the precise energy setting so you can dial in repeatable weld parameters and document them for your process.

Audio confirmation beep — The CDSP emits an audio beep when the unit has reached its targeted weld energy and is ready to fire. This hands-free confirmation keeps your workflow moving without requiring you to look at the machine between welds.

Thermal protection monitoring — The CDSP continuously monitors the internal power supply temperature and engages thermal protection to safeguard the machine during extended high-cycle operation — up to 120 welds per minute.

Small heat-affected zone — Because the energy is released in a very short, fast pulse, heat is concentrated precisely at the weld point. Surrounding materials, components, and sensitive assemblies remain cool and undamaged.

What Can You Weld With the CDSP?

The CDSP is a versatile micro spot welder suited to a wide range of precision and industrial applications:

  • Cross wire welding — bonding fine wires at their intersection points with a clean, consistent nugget
  • Thermocouple welding — creating precision junctions for temperature measurement sensors
  • Copper, aluminum, and brass wire and sheet welding — the fast energy release is ideal for highly conductive metals that challenge slower welding processes
  • Strain gauge attachment — bonding delicate gauge elements to test structures without distortion or heat damage
  • General resistive welding applications — electronics assembly, prototype fabrication, lab research, small-batch production

Choose Your Power: 100 Ws vs. 200 Ws

The CDSP is available in two power variants. Here's how to choose:

100 Watt Second (CD100SPM) — $3,900 Best for: fine wire welding, thermocouple junctions, strain gauges, and light sheet bonding where the workpiece is small and delicate. If your materials are thin (under roughly 0.5mm) or highly resistive, the 100 Ws model provides all the energy you need with maximum precision at the lower end of the scale.

200 Watt Second (CD200SPM) — $5,200 Best for: slightly thicker wires, copper and aluminum sheet welding, and applications where you need headroom above 100 Ws to accommodate a broader range of materials and thicknesses in a single machine. The 200 Ws is the better choice if you run a variety of part types or anticipate scaling your production requirements.

Rule of thumb: if you're unsure, opt for the 200 Ws — it covers everything the 100 Ws does, with more capacity when you need it. Our expert team is also available to help you choose before you buy.

What's Included in the Box

Every Sunstone CDSP ships tested, inspected, and ready for integration into your work environment. Your package includes:

  • Foot Pedal — hands-free weld trigger for consistent, repeatable weld activation
  • Weld Cable Bolts — hardware for attaching weld leads to the output terminals
  • Power Cord — compatible with the system's electrical requirements
  • User Manual — setup instructions, controls overview, and recommended welding procedures
  • Safety Manual — operational precautions and workplace safety guidance

Safety Certified. Built to Industrial Standards.

The Sunstone CDSP carries ETL, CSA, and CE third-party safety certifications — the same marks required for deployment in professional, industrial, government, and institutional environments. This is not a hobbyist machine with consumer-grade safety. It's built and certified for production use.

Why Buy From The Maker's Chest?

You can buy the Sunstone CDSP direct from the manufacturer, or from any number of resellers. Here's why The Maker's Chest is the better choice for buyers who care about the experience after the purchase:

75-Day Return Window — We offer one of the most generous return policies in the industry. If the CDSP isn't the right fit for your application, you have 75 days to return it — no hoops to jump through.

Expert USA-Based Technical Support — Our technical team knows this machine. When you have a setup question, a process challenge, or a calibration issue, you're talking to someone who can actually help — not a general customer service rep reading a script.

Dual Lines of Support — You have access to both our in-house support team and Sunstone's own technical resources. Two channels of expertise working for you.

Authorized Sunstone Reseller — You're getting the same genuine Sunstone product with the full manufacturer warranty, backed by our additional support layer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a capacitive discharge (CD) welder and how does it work? A CD welder stores electrical energy in capacitors before each weld. When triggered, the stored energy is released in a very fast, high-current pulse through the welding electrodes. Because the energy is stored in advance, the output is consistent even if your facility's line voltage fluctuates — giving you repeatable welds every time.

What's the difference between single pulse and dual pulse CD welders? A single pulse welder like the CDSP delivers one discharge per trigger actuation. Dual pulse welders fire two pulses in rapid sequence — the first cleans the weld surface and seats the electrodes, the second makes the bond. Single pulse welders are simpler, lower-cost, and well-suited for applications with clean, prepared surfaces. Dual pulse is preferred when surface contamination or electrode seating is a concern in higher-production environments.

Can the CDSP weld copper? Yes. Copper is highly conductive, which makes it challenging for some welding processes. The fast energy release of capacitive discharge technology is specifically well-suited for welding copper wire, copper ribbon, and copper sheet.

How fast can the CDSP operate? The CDSP can be operated at up to 120 welds per minute, making it capable of supporting moderate production cycles in addition to bench-top and laboratory work.

Which variant should I choose — 100 Ws or 200 Ws? If your application involves fine thermocouple junctions, small wire welding, or strain gauge attachment on thin materials, the 100 Ws is sufficient. If you need a wider range of capability, weld thicker or more conductive materials, or want headroom for future applications, choose the 200 Ws. Not sure? Contact our team before purchasing — we'll help you choose the right fit.

Does this welder come with a warranty? Yes. The CDSP carries Sunstone's manufacturer warranty. As an authorized reseller, purchases through The Maker's Chest are fully covered under that warranty.

What attachments and accessories are compatible with the CDSP? The CDSP is compatible with a range of Sunstone weld head attachments, hand-held probes, and electrode options. Browse our [Resistance Welding Accessories] collection to find compatible add-ons, or contact our team for a recommendation based on your specific application.

What's your return policy? We offer a 75-day return window. If the CDSP doesn't work for your application, reach out to our team and we'll take care of you.
