Frequently Asked Questions
What is battery tab welding and why do you use resistance spot welding for it? Battery tab welding is the process of bonding a thin metal strip (usually nickel) to the positive or negative terminal of a battery cell, connecting individual cells into a pack. Resistance spot welding — and capacitive discharge welding specifically — is preferred because the weld is made in milliseconds, delivering almost no heat to the cell itself. Soldering, by contrast, applies sustained heat that can degrade the cell's internal chemistry and shorten its life.
What does "dual probe" mean on the DPHP hand piece? The DPHP has two electrodes positioned side by side, both on the same side of the workpiece. When you press the hand piece onto a nickel strip tab sitting on top of a battery cell, both electrodes contact the top surface of the strip. Current flows from one electrode, through the strip, and back up through the other electrode — making two parallel weld spots simultaneously. This allows you to weld tabs without ever touching or accessing the bottom of the cell.
What thickness of nickel strip can this system weld?
