OMTech MOPA 60W Autofocus Fiber Laser Marking Machine Specifications

Why 60W Is the Right Power Level for This Machine

OMTech's MOPA autofocus line comes in multiple wattage configurations. The 60W is the highest-power option in the family — and the power difference matters in practice, not just on paper.

More wattage means deeper engraving per pass on harder metals, faster marking throughput on batch production jobs, and more headroom at the top end of the MOPA color marking range where higher peak power produces more vivid color results at specific frequencies. For shops engraving on stainless steel, tool steel, titanium, and harder alloys — or for anyone running this machine at production volume throughout a workday — the 60W configuration provides the output that the lower-wattage versions approach but don't match.

The laser source carries a rated lifespan of 100,000 hours — at 8 hours per day, 250 days per year, that's approximately 50 years of operation before the source approaches end of life. It's a buy-once decision.

MOPA Color Marking: The Feature That Changes What You Can Sell

Standard Q-switched fiber lasers produce black and white marks on metal — and that's the full range of what they do. MOPA changes the capability entirely.

The MOPA 60W's adjustable pulse width (2–500 ns) and pulse frequency (1–4,000 kHz) give you independent control over two parameters that fixed-pulse fiber lasers cannot change. By varying these settings, the laser creates controlled thermal oxide layers on stainless steel and titanium surfaces at different thicknesses — each thickness refracts light at a different wavelength, producing a specific visible color.

Golds, blues, reds, greens, purples, and gradients between them are all achievable and repeatable once parameters are established. For custom jewelry studios, promotional product shops, awards businesses, and personalization services, color-marked metal products command meaningfully higher retail prices than standard black engravings — the MOPA capability is a direct revenue multiplier on the same blank and the same machine time.

The same pulse width and frequency control that produces color also enables:

  • Clean anodized aluminum blackening — without the micro-cracking that standard fiber lasers cause
  • Gentle plastic marking — on ABS, PC, and similar materials without burning or melting
  • Precise shallow marking — for applications where depth control is as important as mark visibility.
OMTech MOPA 60W Autofocus Fiber Laser Marking Machine Color Marking

One-Click Autofocus — The Feature That Makes Daily Production Faster

Manual focus adjustment on a fiber laser marking machine is a repetitive, error-prone process. Every material height change — switching from a flat plate to a ring to a tumbler to a business card — requires re-measuring, re-positioning the Z-axis, and often running a test mark to confirm focus before the production run starts.

The MOPA 60W's one-click autofocus measures the distance to the workpiece surface and adjusts the focal length automatically. Place the material, press autofocus, and begin marking — with no manual measurement and no test-burn calibration cycle.

Autofocus automatically adjusts the focal length for perfect accuracy of ±1mm positioning accuracy, removing the guesswork that causes both missed focus and wasted material in manual setups. For a shop cycling through different material heights throughout a production day, the time savings across a full shift are significant — and the consistency improvement reduces the re-do rate on misaligned marks.

10,000 mm/s. ±0.01mm Accuracy. At the Same Time.

At 10,000 mm/s, the MOPA 60W's marking speed is the ceiling for desktop fiber laser performance in this class. This speed is driven by the galvo scanning system — high-speed mirrors redirect the laser beam without physical gantry movement, enabling sustained velocity that gantry systems simply cannot approach.

The precision that holds at that speed: ±0.01mm marking accuracy. Fine serif text at 1mm height that remains legible. Barcodes and QR codes at sizes suitable for component-level traceability. Intricate logo work with clean lines and no blurring at production velocity.

The 5.9" × 5.9" processing area with a 11.8" × 13.4" workbed handles the full range of typical marking applications — business cards, dog tags, jewelry pieces, tool heads, medical device components, and custom gift items — with a 5.9" × 5.9" field that maintains consistent beam quality and energy uniformity to the edges.

Grid dots on the workbed provide quick visual alignment without requiring the machine to be running — position pieces relative to the grid before triggering the job, reducing alignment-related errors on batch setups.

OMTech MOPA 60W Autofocus Fiber Laser Marking Machine Accuracy

Compatible Materials: Metal Is the Core, But Not the Limit

The MOPA 60W's 1064nm wavelength is optimized for metals, but the full material list covers significant ground:

Metals (marking, engraving, color marking): Stainless steel, carbon steel, tool steel, aluminum, anodized aluminum, gold, silver, platinum, titanium, brass, copper, iron, and most alloys. Color marking available on stainless and titanium.

Hard plastics (marking without melting): ABS, PC, and similar engineering plastics — the MOPA's adjustable pulse width prevents the thermal damage standard fiber lasers cause on sensitive plastic surfaces.

Hard surface materials: Ceramic, marble, granite, stone, brick — surface ablation and marking.

Additional surfaces: Leather, wood, and coated items at surface level.

What it does not do: This is a marking machine, not a CO₂-style cutting machine. It does not cut wood, acrylic, or thick material sheets. For cutting applications, a CO₂ laser is the appropriate tool.

Software: EzCad2 and LightBurn — Both Supported

The MOPA 60W ships with EzCad2 — the industry standard for fiber laser control on Windows (7, 8, 10, 11). EzCad2 provides direct access to MOPA pulse parameters, color marking settings, rotary axis control, and all advanced marking functions.

For users already working in LightBurn, the machine is compatible in galvo mode on both Windows and macOS — no additional driver configuration required. Supported file formats include AI, BMP, DXF, GIF, JPG, PLT, PNG, TGA, and TIF.

The included USB flash drive contains all necessary software, drivers, and documentation for initial setup.

OMTech MOPA 60W Autofocus Fiber Laser Marking Machine Compatible

Compact and Quiet — Right for Studios, Shops, and Classrooms

At 21.8" × 13.2" × 28.3" and 62 lbs., the MOPA 60W fits on a standard workbench alongside other equipment without dominating the workspace. The machine operates quietly — appropriate for studios, shared workspaces, and environments where noise is a concern.

The package includes everything needed to start marking from day one: control box with laser arm, support column, power cord, USB cable, USB flash drive with software, 2 laser keys, hex wrench set, position lock bars, safety goggles, remote control terminal, ruler, screwdriver, and installation manual.

Frequently Asked Questions About OMTech MOPA 60W Autofocus Fiber Laser Marking Machine

Q: What is the practical difference between MOPA and a standard Q-switched fiber laser?
A: A standard Q-switched fiber laser has a fixed pulse width — it marks metal in black and white. MOPA gives you independent control over pulse width (2–500 ns) and pulse frequency (1–4,000 kHz). This adjustability enables color marking on stainless steel and titanium, clean black marking on anodized aluminum without micro-cracking, gentle surface marking on plastics without burning, and precise depth control on engraving. If your work involves color marking or anodized aluminum — choose MOPA. If you only need fast black marking on bare metal, a standard Q-switched fiber laser is sufficient and costs less.

Q: What's the difference between the MOPA 60W Autofocus and the MOPA 60W Manual Focus versions?
A: The laser source, MOPA capability, marking speed, and accuracy are identical between both versions. The autofocus version adds the motorized one-click autofocus mechanism and is built in a larger cabinet with an arm design (21.8" × 13.2" × 28.3", 62 lbs). The manual focus version is more compact (15.7" × 13.3" × 21.6", 38 lbs). For operators who switch frequently between materials of different heights, the autofocus eliminates a repetitive manual adjustment step. For operators who primarily mark at a fixed material height, the manual focus version is sufficient and smaller.

Q: Can it really produce color on stainless steel?
A: Yes. By varying pulse width and frequency, the MOPA laser creates controlled oxide layers of different thicknesses on the stainless steel surface. Different thicknesses reflect light at different wavelengths, producing visible colors — golds, blues, reds, greens, purples, and gradients. This requires parameter testing and calibration for your specific material. An OMTech color chart file is available for download from their product page to help accelerate the parameter development process.

Q: What materials can it mark and engrave?
A: Metals (stainless steel, aluminum, anodized aluminum, gold, silver, platinum, titanium, brass, copper, tool steel, iron), hard plastics (ABS, PC, and similar), ceramics, marble, granite, stone, brick, leather, wood, and coated surfaces. Color marking is available on stainless steel and titanium. This machine is not designed for CO₂-style cutting of wood, acrylic, or thick non-metal sheet material.

Q: Is it compatible with macOS?
A: Yes via LightBurn galvo mode, which runs natively on macOS. EzCad2 requires Windows (7, 8, 10, or 11). Mac users can run EzCad2 through Parallels or Boot Camp if needed, but most Mac-based operators use LightBurn as the primary interface without any workaround.

Q: How does the one-click autofocus work?
A: Autofocus automatically adjusts the focal length for perfect accuracy when you press the autofocus button. The system measures the distance from the focusing lens to the workpiece surface and adjusts the Z-axis accordingly. This eliminates manual measuring, manual Z-axis positioning, and test-burn calibration cycles between materials of different heights.

Q: Can it engrave cylindrical objects like rings and tumblers?
A: Yes, with a compatible rotary axis attachment. OMTech offers a 70mm rotary axis configured for this machine as an upgrade option at checkout. Rotary engraving allows marking on rings, bracelets, cylinders, and tumblers — expanding the product types the machine can handle without a separate setup.

Q: What's the laser source lifespan?
A: The laser source is rated at 100,000 hours MTTF (mean time to failure). At 8-hour daily operation across 250 working days per year, that's approximately 50 years of rated life — meaning the source will functionally outlast the rest of the machine under normal use.

Q: Why buy from The Maker's Chest instead of directly from OMTech?
A: Our 75-day return window gives you significantly more evaluation time than OMTech's direct return policy — enough time to fully set up, run your real production materials, develop your MOPA parameter library, and confirm the machine delivers at the level your business requires. Our USA-based expert support team is reachable by phone and email for EzCad2 and LightBurn setup, color marking parameter guidance, and production troubleshooting throughout your ownership. If you're deciding between the autofocus and manual-focus versions, we'll give you a straight answer before you order.
