Q: Do I need any welding experience to use this machine?
A: No prior welding experience is needed. Most people are making quality welds within 5 to 30 minutes of their first use. If you've ever used a hot glue gun, the motion is similar — draw the gun along the joint at a steady pace. The machine handles the hard part.
Q: What materials can the FSL Portable Laser Welder handle?
A: It welds aluminum, stainless steel, mild carbon steel, copper, titanium, brass, and most other metals and alloys. It performs best on materials up to approximately 5/16" thick. For thicker structural work, traditional MIG or TIG is still the better choice.
Q: How is this different from a MIG or TIG welder?
A: Laser welding uses a focused beam of light (photons) rather than an electric arc. This means significantly less heat input, less distortion on thin metals, virtually no spatter, and a much shorter learning curve. The tradeoff is that fit-up needs to be reasonably precise — the laser beam can't bridge large gaps the way MIG can.
Q: What power does it require?
A: The machine runs on 220V single-phase, 20 amps — the same outlet type used by most shop tools, air compressors, and dryers. If you're setting up a new space, a standard 20A, 220V circuit is all you need.
Q: How much protective gear do I need?
A: The included OD 6+ laser safety glasses are required and sufficient for eye protection. Because the workpiece doesn't get as hot as in arc welding, heavy gloves and full protective clothing are not required — though lightweight gloves are recommended. The flash is dramatically lower than MIG or TIG, making the work environment more comfortable.
Q: Can I use this for one-sided welds without accessing the back of the part?
A: Yes. The machine supports one-sided spot welding (often called laser riveting), which lets you create a strong joint without drilling, tapping, screwing, or accessing the back of the part. This is a major advantage for enclosed assemblies, tubes, and frames.
