Most desktop laser engravers use CO₂ or diode (infrared) wavelengths. These work by generating heat — which burns, chars, and in some cases melts what they're engraving. On wood, the result is a brown halo around every line. On plastics, it's surface melting. On glass, it's rough surface etching at best. On chocolate, it's a melted mess.
UV laser at 355nm works differently. The ultraviolet photon energy breaks molecular bonds chemically rather than thermally — the material is modified without generating significant heat. This is why UV engraving is described as a "cold process" — the surface isn't burned, it's precisely ablated.
UV lasers offer extremely high photon energy that opens up applications that visible and infrared laser sources simply can't address — including precision marking on heat-sensitive materials, glass and crystal interior engraving, and marking on plastics without discoloration.
The result is a machine that handles applications completely outside the range of CO₂ and diode technology — including engraving inside materials rather than just on their surface.
Omni XE vs Omni X vs Omni 1 — Choosing the Right MachineUnderstanding where the Omni XE fits in the lineup is the most important decision on this page.
Omni 1 — the reliable entry point. Manual focus via electric lift, no LiDAR autofocus, no 3D subsurface crystal engraving, no Slide Extension support. Excellent for shops whose primary work is surface engraving on tumblers, jewelry, small wood and acrylic pieces. The Omni 1 gives you professional UV quality without the higher ticket — think of it as a rock-solid foundation for building a brand with.
Omni XE (this machine) — offers the same 16K HD precision, LiDAR autofocus, and SpeedMax™ 10,000 mm/s engraving system as the Omni X, but at a friendlier price and with a more lightweight, flexible setup. Includes 3D crystal inner engraving, Slide Extension compatibility, updated control board architecture, and LiDAR autofocus. The key difference from the Omni X: the Omni XE has an open design rather than a fully enclosed cabinet. If you already work in a controlled environment and value flexibility, the Omni XE gives you identical engraving results at a lower entry cost.
Omni X — the fully enclosed, Class-1 flaghsip. Same UV precision, same LiDAR autofocus, same 3D crystal capability — plus the integrated OD5+ enclosure that eliminates the need for safety goggles for observers, smart cover sensor, 99.72% dust containment, and fire prevention from the ZeroBurn™ design. If your workspace is shared, visible to customers, or you want maximum safety with zero setup, the Omni X is the right choice. If you already have proper PPE and ventilation, the Omni XE delivers the same laser results.
The application that most clearly separates the Omni XE (and Omni X) from the Omni 1: the ability to engrave 3D designs floating inside solid glass and crystal — completely without any physical surface contact.
The machine works layer by layer, starting at the bottom of the crystal and raising the Z-axis after each pass, much like a 3D printer, creating micro-fractures inside the glass that form a detailed 3D image that appears to float inside the crystal when illuminated.
Import a 3D STL file into ComMarker Studio, scale it to your crystal dimensions, and run the job. The finished result — a floating portrait, sculpture, or logo suspended inside a solid block — retails for $40–$80+ from a $5 crystal blank. Jobs complete in 20 minutes to an hour depending on complexity and crystal size.
This feature alone opens significant possibilities for small businesses producing personalized keepsakes, awards, and luxury gifts that customers have seen in retail and assumed required industrial equipment.

Anyone who has used a CO₂ or diode laser on light wood knows the result: a brown halo of thermal damage surrounds every engraved line, requiring cleanup or finishing to make the product sellable.
ZeroBurn™ is the Omni XE's UV cold process applied to organic surfaces. Because the mechanism is photochemical rather than thermal, the laser modifies the surface without generating the heat that causes charring.
On wood: clean, high-contrast black marks that look hand-carved, capturing grain texture sharply. On leather: precise marks with clean edge definition and no discoloration. On chocolate: surface modification without melting or deforming. On light fabrics: marking without heat discoloration.
For makers producing premium goods where surface cleanliness is the product — and the margin — ZeroBurn™ is the capability that justifies the UV premium over a CO₂ machine.
The Omni 1 requires manual Z-axis focusing. The Omni XE doesn't.
The Omni XE's LiDAR ranging system uses triangulation to measure the distance from the galvo head to the material surface with 0.001mm precision, then automatically drives the Z-axis motor to the correct focal position. Hit autofocus in ComMarker Studio and the machine handles the rest.
Switching between a thick crystal block, a thin metal tag, and a leather sheet throughout a production day no longer requires calibration stops. Place the material, press autofocus, engrave. This single feature is the most significant workflow difference between the Omni XE and the Omni 1 for operators cycling through multiple material types.
The Omni XE runs on ComMarker Studio — with LiDAR autofocus integration, OTA updates, 3D crystal engraving workflow, and the ImagePlus™ AI photo enhancement algorithm for photorealistic portrait engravings. 3D crystal inner engraving and Slide Extension require ComMarker Studio — these features are not available in LightBurn.
For standard surface engraving, the machine is LightBurn compatible on both Windows and macOS. If you're comfortable designing in LightBurn, you can use it for the majority of production work and switch to ComMarker Studio for 3D crystal jobs.

The Omni XE's UV laser spot measures 0.0019mm — compared to an average CO₂ engraver's 1.0mm spot. That's a 526× improvement in beam spot size.
In practice: fine serif fonts at 2mm height that remain legible, photorealistic portrait engravings on leather, jewelry hallmarks at trade scale, PCB trace markings, and intricate geometric patterns on metal surfaces where the detail would be lost on any other desktop laser.
The industrial-grade galvanometer system drives 10,000 mm/s engraving speed — a galvo laser's fundamental advantage over gantry systems, completing jobs in a fraction of the time a moving-head machine would require.
XY positioning accuracy of 0.001mm ensures this precision holds across the full working area on every job, without calibration drift between pieces.
The standard 150mm × 150mm (6W) working area covers most jewelry, small gifts, and component marking. The optional Slide Extension expands the effective working range to 150mm × 400mm (6W) or 250mm × 400mm (12W) — unlocking long-format signage, full cutting boards, large decorative pieces, and batch layouts that the standard field can't accommodate.
This accessory is exclusive to the Omni XE and Omni X — the Omni 1 does not support the Slide Extension. If longer-format production is part of your business plan, the Omni XE is the minimum configuration that supports it.
The ComMarker Omni XE is available from ComMarker directly and through other resellers. Here's what changes when you order through The Maker's Chest:

Q: What's the main difference between the Omni XE and the Omni X?
A: The biggest difference lies in design and safety structure. The Omni X features a fully enclosed cabinet with an OD5+ UV-blocking shield, smart cover sensor, 99.72% dust isolation, and Class-1 laser safety certification — no goggles required for observers. The Omni XE has an open design that trades full enclosure for a lighter, more portable, and more affordable setup — while delivering identical laser precision, LiDAR autofocus, 3D crystal capability, and Slide Extension support. Choose Omni X if you want plug-and-play safety in a shared or customer-visible space. Choose Omni XE if you already have safety goggles and ventilation and want the same laser performance at a lower price.
Q: What's the difference between the Omni XE and the Omni 1?
A: The Omni 1 uses manual electric-lift focusing without LiDAR autofocus, does not support 3D subsurface crystal engraving, and does not support the Slide Extension accessory. The Omni XE adds LiDAR autofocus, 3D crystal inner engraving capability, Slide Extension support, and an updated control board architecture. If 3D crystal gifts, LiDAR-assisted workflow efficiency, or long-format production are part of your business, the Omni XE is the correct step up.
Q: What UV technology makes this different from CO₂ and diode lasers?
A: UV lasers at 355nm break molecular bonds through a photochemical process rather than generating heat. This cold process is what enables ZeroBurn™ engraving on wood without charring, marking on plastics without melting, engraving inside glass and crystal, and marking on chocolate and delicate surfaces — applications that CO₂ and diode lasers cannot handle cleanly.
Q: Does the Omni XE support 3D crystal inner engraving?
A: Yes — this is one of the key features that distinguishes the Omni XE from the Omni 1. Import a 3D STL file into ComMarker Studio, scale it to your crystal dimensions, and the machine engraves layer by layer from the bottom up, creating micro-fractures inside the crystal that form a floating 3D image. This feature requires ComMarker Studio software.
Q: What software is required for 3D crystal engraving?
A: ComMarker Studio is required for 3D subsurface crystal engraving and Slide Extension functionality. LightBurn handles surface engraving and standard marking on the Omni XE. Most operators use both — LightBurn for daily surface work, ComMarker Studio for 3D crystal sessions.
Q: Is it safe to use in a home workshop?
A: Yes, with proper precautions. The Omni XE is an open-design machine — laser safety goggles are required during operation. A fume extractor or ventilation is recommended for regular production use on organic materials. The ZeroBurn™ cold process significantly reduces smoke and odor compared to CO₂ engravers on the same materials.
Q: What materials can it engrave and cut?
A: Virtually all non-ferrous materials: wood, leather, MDF, acrylic, bamboo, fabric, glass, crystal, ceramic, jade, marble, slate, food (including chocolate), paper, plastics, stainless steel (surface marking), aluminum, brass, gold, silver, platinum, titanium, and more. For bare metal deep engraving and cutting, a fiber laser is the more appropriate tool. The Omni XE is a non-metal and surface-marking specialist.
Q: Does the 10W model require a water chiller?
A: Yes — the 10W Omni XE uses water cooling. The water chiller is included with the 10W configuration. The 5W model is air-cooled with no chiller required. If a chiller footprint in your workspace is a concern, the 5W air-cooled configuration is the simpler operational setup.
Q: Why buy from The Maker's Chest instead of directly from ComMarker?
A: Our 75-day return window gives you significantly more evaluation time than ComMarker's direct policy — enough to run 3D crystal jobs, develop your material parameter library, and confirm the machine delivers what your business needs. Our USA-based expert support team is reachable by phone and email and is available for setup support, ComMarker Studio workflow questions, and production troubleshooting throughout your ownership.
