Description

90W Power, 1,200 mm/s Speed, and a Bed Big Enough to Stop Cutting Corners.

The OneLaser Cobra 8 combines a 31.50" × 19.69" (800 × 500mm) workspace, 2G acceleration, and a DSP control system that runs jobs 2–3× faster than standard G-code machines — the Cobra 8 is where small shops graduate from desktop lasers into real production.

Most desktop CO2 lasers cap out around 24" × 12" — fine for one-off gifts, but a bottleneck the moment you're running batch orders, full sheet goods, or signage that doesn't fit a small bed. Stepping up usually means a bigger machine, a bigger price tag, and a workspace commitment most small shops aren't ready for. The OneLaser Cobra 8 is built for the businesses in between: a 90W water-cooled glass CO2 tube, an 800 × 500mm work area, and workshop-grade speed and precision, without the footprint or price of a full industrial cabinet system.

1,200 mm/s and 2G Acceleration — Speed That Holds Up on Real Jobs

A laser's top speed only matters if the machine can actually reach it between cuts. The Cobra 8's motor system delivers 1,200 mm/s engraving speed backed by 2G acceleration — meaning less overshoot and faster direction changes on detailed paths, so the machine spends more time cutting and less time decelerating and reversing. That combination puts the Cobra 8 ahead of many similarly-priced 90–100W glass-tube machines on the market, which commonly top out closer to 600 mm/s.

DSP Control: 2–3× Faster Than G-Code, Not Just on Paper

Under the hood, the Cobra 8 runs on a DSP (Digital Signal Processor) control system rather than standard G-code motion control. DSP path optimization plans the toolpath in real time, cutting unnecessary travel and idle time. In practice, OneLaser cites jobs that take 30 minutes on a G-code machine finishing in 10–15 minutes on the Cobra 8 — a meaningful throughput difference for any shop billing by job, not by hour.

MagSwitch™, Autofocus, and a 16MP Camera — Setup That Doesn't Eat Into Production Time

Three systems work together to cut the setup time out of every job:

  • Autofocus: Place the material, run autofocus, and the machine sets the optimal focal distance automatically — no ruler, no test burn.
  • Red-Dot Positioning: A visible red laser marks the optical path on the material before the job starts, so you can confirm placement before committing.
  • MagSwitch™: OneLaser's patented magnetic lens holder makes lens swaps and cleaning completely tool-free — useful when switching focal lengths for different detail levels.
  • 16MP Camera: High-resolution overhead camera for visual alignment and drag-and-drop artwork placement, particularly useful for irregular or pre-printed blanks.

Front-to-Rear Pass-Through for Materials Up to 45mm Thick

The Cobra 8's through-feed door design opens from both the front and the rear, letting oversized boards, long signage blanks, and thick stock (up to 45mm) pass straight through the cabinet instead of being limited by the interior bed dimensions. For a shop running long-format material — batons, trim, oversized signage — this removes a size ceiling that fully-enclosed desktop machines can't get around.

Aerospace-Grade Frame + Ball-Screw Z-Axis — ±0.01mm You Can Repeat All Day

The gantry is built from integrally extruded, aerospace-grade aluminum, validated through NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) testing to hold its geometry at high speed instead of flexing or vibrating on fast direction changes. The Z-axis runs on a precision ball screw, delivering ±0.01mm repeat positioning accuracy — meaning your focal height stays consistent job after job, not just on the first pass. A synchronized belt system eliminates backlash and torque loss for smoother, more stable motion during rapid vertical adjustments.

Smart Dual Air-Assist — Cleaner Results With Zero Manual Switching

The built-in Dual Air-Assist system automatically switches between Low-Air mode for clean, detailed engraving (avoiding blow-out on fine corners) and High-Air mode for faster cutting speed and better fire safety on thicker cuts. It's fully automatic and software-integrated — there's no manual valve to remember to adjust between an engraving job and a cutting job.

300+ Materials Now, Bare Metal Later — Optional 3W/5W IR Module

Out of the box, the Cobra 8's CO2 laser handles 300+ materials — wood, acrylic, leather, glass, rubber, and more. For shops that also need to mark bare or coated metal (stainless steel, anodized aluminum, tumblers), an optional 3W or 5W infrared (IR) module adds that capability without buying a second machine. It's sold separately starting around $599, installs without professional help, and integrates directly with LightBurn.

Built-In Temperature Monitoring and Enclosed Safety Design

The Cobra 8 ships in a fully enclosed housing with safety lid detection and a built-in temperature sensor with intelligent monitoring, so the system can flag abnormal heat conditions before they become a problem.

What's in the Box

  • OneLaser Cobra 8 (90W) laser engraver/cutter unit
  • Fixed honeycomb worktable
  • Focusing lens
  • Air-assist nozzle and accessories
  • Power cord and setup documentation

Not included: An industrial water chiller is required to run the Cobra 8 and is sold separately (OneLaser's CW-5200 or an equivalent unit rated for 90–150W glass tubes is recommended). Budget for this as part of your total setup cost.

Warranty, Support & Made in USA Engineering

The OneLaser Cobra 8 is backed by a 1-year manufacturer's warranty on the laser engraving machine, covering defects in materials and workmanship under normal use. OneLaser's machines are engineered by a 100% U.S.-based team, with nationwide on-site service available across the U.S.

The Maker's Chest Difference

The OneLaser Cobra 8 is available directly from OneLaser and through other resellers. Here's what changes when you buy it through The Maker's Chest:

  • 🛡️ 75-day returns — more than double OneLaser's standard 30-day direct return window. That's real time to get the Cobra 8 into your workflow, run it against your actual material mix, and confirm it's the right machine before you're locked in.
  • 💻 A free LightBurn Pro license included — a $199 value, activated and ready to go. OneLaser doesn't include this when you buy direct, so you're not stuck running the 30-day trial or paying out of pocket to get the machine working.
  • 🇺🇸 Expert USA-based technical support — our team can help with LightBurn setup, material settings, and camera alignment workflow, on top of whatever OneLaser's own support provides.
  • 📞 Dual lines of support — phone and email, so you have a direct path to a real person when you're mid-production and something needs attention.
  • 🔧 Honest pre-sale guidance — not sure if the Cobra 8 is enough machine, or if you should size up to the Cobra 10 or Cobra 14? Talk to us before you order and we'll give you a straight answer based on your actual material mix and order volume.

Cobra 8 vs. Cobra 10 vs. Cobra 14 — Choosing Your Bed Size

Optional IR Metal Module Yes Yes Yes

Choose the Cobra 8 if your shop's largest recurring job fits comfortably inside an 800×500mm bed and floor space is at a premium — it delivers the same speed, resolution, and automation as its bigger siblings in a smaller footprint.

Choose the Cobra 10 or Cobra 14 if you're regularly cutting full sheet stock, large-format signage, thicker jigged materials, or need the extra cutting power of 100–130W for hardwoods and thick acrylics — the bed size, Z-axis clearance, and wattage scale up while every other feature stays identical.

Frequently Asked Questions about the OneLaser Cobra 8

Q: What's the difference between the Cobra 8, Cobra 10, and Cobra 14? A: All three share the same 1,200 mm/s speed, 2G acceleration, 1,000 DPI resolution, and automation features (autofocus, camera, MagSwitch™, dual air-assist). The differences are laser power (90W / 100W / 130W), work area (800×500mm / 1000×600mm / 1400×900mm), and Z-axis clearance (150mm on the Cobra 8 vs. 280mm on the Cobra 10 and 14). Pick based on your largest recurring job size and how thick a material or jig you need to clear — not just on "more power is better."

Q: Does the Cobra 8 need a water chiller? A: Yes, and it's required, not optional. The Cobra 8 runs on a 90W water-cooled glass CO2 tube — without a properly maintained chiller, the tube can overheat and fail. The chiller is sold separately from the machine (OneLaser's CW-5200 or an equivalent unit rated for up to 150W is recommended), so budget for it as part of your total setup cost.

Q: What materials can the Cobra 8 cut and engrave? A: The CO2 laser handles 300+ non-metal materials, including wood, plywood, acrylic, leather, glass, rubber, cardboard, and fabric. It cannot cut or engrave bare or coated metal on its own — that requires the optional 3W/5W IR module, sold separately.

Q: Can the Cobra 8 engrave metal? A: Not with the standard CO2 laser alone. Adding the optional infrared (IR) module unlocks metal marking on stainless steel, anodized aluminum, coated brass, and similar surfaces, without needing a second machine.

Q: Is 1,200 mm/s actually achievable on real jobs, or just a marketing number? A: The speed is backed by 2G acceleration, which is what determines whether the machine actually reaches top speed on real (non-straight-line) paths rather than spending most of a job decelerating and re-accelerating. OneLaser also cites its DSP-based path optimization as delivering 2–3× faster real-world completion times versus comparable G-code-controlled machines — a 30-minute job finishing in roughly 10–15 minutes.

Q: What's the Cobra 8's warranty, and what does it cover? A: 1 year on the laser engraving machine, covering defects in materials and workmanship under normal use and service. It doesn't cover damage from misuse, unapproved modifications, or normal wear on consumables like the tube and lenses.

Q: Why buy the Cobra 8 from The Maker's Chest instead of directly from OneLaser? A: Our 75-day return window is more than double OneLaser's 30-day direct policy, giving you real time to run the machine through your actual production before you're committed. You also get USA-based expert support reachable by phone and email, plus honest guidance if you're deciding between the Cobra 8 and a larger Cobra model.

Q: What software does the Cobra 8 use? A: LightBurn and RDWorks are both fully compatible. The Cobra 8 also has an onboard GT5c touchscreen control panel for direct machine operation.

Q: Is the Cobra 8 safe to run in a shared workspace? A: The machine ships in a fully enclosed housing with safety lid detection and a built-in temperature sensor with intelligent monitoring. As with any CO2 laser, proper exhaust ventilation is required to clear fumes and dust produced during cutting and engraving — this isn't optional equipment, it's a safety requirement regardless of which brand or wattage you run.

Q: How is the Cobra 8 different from OneLaser's XRF or XT desktop machines? A: The XRF and XT are desktop-class machines with a smaller 24"×12" bed, designed for makers and side-hustle businesses working with smaller-format material. The Cobra 8 is a workshop-scale cabinet machine with a much larger 800×500mm bed, front-to-rear pass-through for oversized stock, and more raw cutting power — built for shops that have outgrown a desktop footprint. If you're not sure which tier fits your actual order volume, our team can help you decide before you buy.

Q: What's in the box, and does it include the water chiller? A: The Cobra 8 ships with the laser unit, a fixed honeycomb worktable, focusing lens, and air-assist accessories. The water chiller is not included — it's a required separate purchase, since the 90W glass tube can't run without one. We're happy to help you pick the right chiller for your setup before you order.

  • Delivery is to front car port, driveway, doorstep or wherever practical depending upon site access. Drivers are not permitted to move item(s) within the residence or around the property due to OHS reasons.
