OMTech MOPA 20W Compact Integrated Fiber Laser Marker Specifications

Why MOPA at 20W — Not Just Another Entry-Level Fiber Laser

The most important decision in this category isn't between brands — it's between laser source technologies. The OMTech MOPA 20W uses a JPT MOPA (Master Oscillator Power Amplifier) source, which gives it two capabilities that standard galvo fiber lasers at the same wattage cannot offer.

Color marking on compatible metals. MOPA's independently adjustable pulse width and frequency allow the laser to create controlled oxide layers on stainless steel and titanium surfaces at different thicknesses. Different thicknesses reflect light at different wavelengths, producing visible colors — golds, blues, reds, greens, and purples. For custom jewelry, personalized metal gifts, branded merchandise, and premium awards, this color capability directly increases the retail price and perceived quality of the finished product compared to standard black marking.

Clean dark marking on anodized aluminum. Standard fiber lasers cause micro-cracking on anodized surfaces at high frequency — a problem that requires post-processing to hide or shows up as rough, inconsistent marks. The MOPA's adjustable pulse width produces clean, high-contrast dark marks on anodized surfaces without damaging the anodized layer.

These are the two capabilities that justify choosing MOPA over a standard galvo fiber laser at the same wattage — and both are fully available on this 20W compact unit.

39.7 Lbs. One Piece. A Field Larger Than Most Compact Competitors.

At 39.7 lbs. in a 15.7" × 13.4" × 21.3" integrated form factor, the MOPA 20W is genuinely one-person portable. Carry it between workstations, take it to a market or craft event, store it when the workspace is needed for something else. This is the machine for a jewelry studio that needs fiber laser marking in the corner of a bench-sized workspace — not a dedicated machine room.

What makes this unit notable within the compact integrated category is the 6.9" × 6.9" (175 × 175mm) marking field — larger than many competing compact fiber lasers, which are typically limited to 4.3" × 4.3" or 5.9" × 5.9" fields. The extra field area means:

  • Larger pieces fit without repositioning — wider nameplates, longer tags, and most jewelry pieces all land within the 6.9" field
  • Batch layouts with multiple small pieces can be nested across the full field for higher throughput per cycle
  • More creative freedom for designs that use the full marking area

At a rated 100,000-hour laser source lifespan, the JPT MOPA source is functionally a lifetime component at any reasonable daily usage level.

OMTech MOPA 20W Compact Integrated Fiber Laser Marker Dual Red Dot Locators

Dual Red Dot Locators — Precise Placement Before the Laser Fires

For personalization work where placement accuracy matters — a name centered on a dog tag, a logo positioned precisely on a ring, artwork aligned to a specific location on a nameplate — the dual red dot locators are the setup feature that makes it practical in production.

Before the laser fires, two visible red dots project onto the material surface, showing exactly where the mark will be centered and bounded. Position your workpiece to the red dot references, confirm the alignment visually, and trigger the job.

Compared to single red-dot systems (which show one reference point) or no locators at all (which require test burns to confirm placement), the dual red dot system provides faster visual confirmation and reduces the test-and-adjust cycle on initial setup — saving material, saving time, and reducing the misalignment rate that costs both.

10,000 mm/s Speed — Galvo Technology in a Desktop Form Factor

The MOPA 20W's 10,000 mm/s marking speed comes from the galvo scanning system — high-speed mirrors redirecting the laser beam without physically moving the laser head. This is why galvo fiber lasers complete detailed logos in seconds that would take several minutes on gantry machines: there's no mechanical mass to accelerate and decelerate at every direction change.

At 10,000 mm/s with ±0.01mm marking accuracy, the MOPA 20W produces:

  • Fine text at sizes required for jewelry hallmarks, medical device IDs, and product labels
  • QR codes and barcodes at scanning-ready sizes for traceability and product identification
  • Detailed logo artwork with clean line edges and smooth gradients on compatible metals
  • Color-marked designs with the vibrancy and repeatability that production marking requires.

OMTech MOPA 20W Compact Integrated Fiber Laser Marker Boost Speed

Rotary Axis Ready — From Flat to Curved in Seconds

The MOPA 20W includes a rotary axis connection port, enabling circumferential marking on rings, bracelets, pens, tumblers, and cylindrical objects with an optional rotary attachment.

For a jewelry business or personalization shop, the rotary capability expands billable product types without requiring a separate machine. A ring engraving job, a bracelet batch, or a set of branded metal tubes all run from the same machine that handles your flat nameplate and tag work — the rotary attachment connects to the port and handles the rotation automatically while the galvo handles the marking.

The rotary attachment is available as an optional add-on at checkout.

Compatible Materials — Positioned Honestly

Strong fit — MOPA color marking and dark marking:
Stainless steel, titanium, chromium, and other oxide-forming metals for full color marking. Anodized aluminum for clean dark marks without layer damage.

Standard fiber marking:
Gold, silver, platinum, brass, copper, iron, and most common alloys — high-contrast black marking for logos, serial numbers, barcodes, and decorative engraving.

Compatible for surface marking:
Select hard plastics (ABS, PC), stone, granite, leather, and coated surfaces depending on material composition and settings.

Be clear about this: The MOPA 20W is a surface marking and shallow engraving machine — not a CO₂-style cutting machine. For cutting wood, acrylic, or thick non-metal material, a CO₂ laser is the right tool. Within its design scope — metal marking, MOPA color effects, personalization, serial numbers, barcodes — the 20W MOPA delivers professionally.

LightBurn Native. macOS Supported. EzCad Available.

The MOPA 20W Integrated is natively compatible with LightBurn galvo mode on both Windows and macOS — with no workarounds, no special drivers, no need for Parallels on a Mac. For operators already using LightBurn for CO₂ or diode machines, the interface and workflow transfer directly.

EzCad is also bundled for Windows users who prefer the traditional galvo fiber laser control environment.

Supported file formats include BMP, GIF, JPG, JPEG, DXF, DST, and AI.

Frequently Asked Questions About OMTech MOPA 20W Compact Integrated Fiber Laser Marker

Q: What is MOPA and why does it matter at 20W?
A: MOPA (Master Oscillator Power Amplifier) adds independent control over pulse width and frequency that standard Q-switched galvo fiber lasers cannot adjust. At any wattage, this enables color marking on stainless steel and titanium, clean dark marking on anodized aluminum without micro-cracking, and gentler marking on sensitive plastics. At 20W specifically, the MOPA capability is fully available — the trade-off versus the 60W is slower throughput on deep or detail-intensive jobs that benefit from higher wattage. For jewelry, small gifts, personalization, and batch marking at modest volumes, 20W MOPA delivers excellent results.

Q: What's the difference between the MOPA 20W and the MOPA 60W Integrated?
A: Both use the same integrated compact form factor, LightBurn compatibility, dual red dot locators, and MOPA color marking capability. The 60W delivers approximately 3× the output power — enabling deeper engraving per pass, faster throughput on complex graphics and batch runs, and stronger marking on harder metals and denser designs. The 20W is the right starting point for jewelry, personalization, and occasional custom marking. The 60W is the better choice for shops running the machine intensively throughout the day or regularly marking demanding materials. Contact our team with your expected daily volume and we'll give you a direct recommendation.

Q: How does the 6.9" × 6.9" field compare to other compact fiber lasers?
A: The 6.9" × 6.9" (175 × 175mm) field is meaningfully larger than the 4.3" × 4.3" (110 × 110mm) field on many competing compact integrated units, including OMTech's own Galvo 20W integrated model. The larger field accommodates wider nameplates, longer labels, larger batch layouts, and more creative design space — without requiring a larger overall machine footprint. For most jewelry and personalization work, 6.9" provides comfortable space around typical piece sizes.

Q: Does color marking work on all metals?
A: Color marking works specifically on metals that form visible oxide layers — primarily stainless steel, titanium, and chromium. It does not produce color marks on gold, non-anodized aluminum, or most non-ferrous metals. For dark marking on anodized aluminum, the MOPA produces clean high-contrast results without damaging the anodized layer. Color marking requires testing and parameter calibration on your specific material — results vary by metal grade, surface finish, and parameter settings.

Q: Is it compatible with macOS?
A: Yes — LightBurn galvo mode runs natively on macOS with no workarounds. This is a genuine practical advantage for Mac-based jewelry studios and creative professionals who don't want to deal with Windows emulation for their laser software.

Q: Can it engrave rings, bracelets, and cylindrical objects?
A: Yes, with an optional rotary axis attachment that connects to the machine's built-in rotary port. The rotary enables marking on rings, bracelets, pens, tumblers, and other cylindrical or curved objects. Add the rotary at checkout, or contact our team for guidance on which rotary configuration fits your piece range.

Q: What's the laser source lifespan?
A: The JPT MOPA source is rated at 100,000 hours estimated service life. At 8 hours daily, 250 working days per year, that's approximately 50 years of rated operation — a functionally lifetime component under normal workshop use.

Q: What's in the box?
A: Fiber laser engraver unit, tool box, protective eyewear, USB flash drive with software, ruler, USB cable, set of hex wrenches, and instruction manual.

Q: Why buy from The Maker's Chest instead of directly from OMTech?
A: Our 75-day return window gives you significantly more evaluation time than OMTech's direct return policy — enough to set up the machine, develop your MOPA color marking parameter library, and confirm it performs for your specific applications. Our USA-based expert support team is reachable by phone and email for LightBurn and EzCad setup, MOPA parameter guidance, and production troubleshooting. If you're deciding between the 20W and 60W, or between the integrated compact and the autofocus workstation, we'll give you a straight recommendation before you order.

Home Delivery (Bulky Items)

  • This service is generally for products over 40kg in weight, as it is a requirement for these products to be palletised for delivery.
  • This service utilises power tailgates with two-man crews or crane trucks when required and this is included in the quoted price.
  • The receiver will be contacted prior to delivery to arrange a suitable delivery date and time. Deliveries are scheduled for either an AM or PM slot on any given day.
  • Delivery is to front car port, driveway, doorstep or wherever practical depending upon site access. Drivers are not permitted to move item(s) within the residence or around the property due to OHS reasons.
  • This service assumes reasonable and safe access to the site is available. Overhanging trees, steep driveways, unsealed driveways, narrow driveways or streets or an unforeseen obstruction may deem the delivery unavailable.
  • If your delivery address is in a regional or remote location, we recommend shipping to the nearest depot as the most affordable option.

We can't advise on the exact time and day the delivery will occur as this is not within our control, however you will be emailed the tracking details where you will be able to contact the freight company for more accurate timeframes.
