Why 100W Changes the Equation for Production-Level Cutting

Most CO2 laser buyers evaluate power in terms of wattage numbers — but the practical difference between 60W, 90W, and 100W only becomes clear when you're running real production volumes on real materials.

At 60W: Effective for engraving and cutting thinner stock (up to about 6mm) at commercial speeds. Multiple passes required on 8–10mm material. Extended cycle times on sustained cutting runs.

At 90W: A meaningful improvement — faster single-pass cutting on medium-thickness materials, better throughput on detailed cutting jobs, more comfortable operating headroom during long production sessions.

At 100W: The Yongli H4 tube delivers the highest sustained output in the 20" × 28" Maker lineup. Single-pass capability on thick stock that would require two or more passes at lower wattages. Cleaner cut faces on denser materials. Faster engraving throughput on detailed artwork at production speed. And critically — more reserve power for the machine to sustain consistent output across 6–8 hour production days without degrading toward the end of a shift.

For a sign shop cutting thick plywood, a production studio regularly processing dense MDF, or any business where machine throughput directly limits daily revenue — the 100W is the configuration where the economics of upgrading make sense.

Yongli H4 — A Production-Grade Tube Built to Last

The Yongli H4 CO2 laser tube is the industrial-grade source behind the MF2028-100's 100W output — and it's meaningfully different from the tubes in lower-power configurations:

12,000-hour estimated service life — six times longer than the 2,000-hour tubes in 60W entry-level machines. The H4's longevity under consistent production conditions is why it's the tube of choice for shops that need to budget tube replacement as a predictable, infrequent maintenance cost rather than a constant operational expense.

57.1" tube length and 60mm diameter — the larger physical tube dimensions support the stable resonant cavity needed for consistent 100W output without the output drift that shorter, smaller-diameter tubes show under sustained high-power operation.

Lifespan extended when operated at lower settings — for shops whose daily job mix doesn't always demand full 100W output, running the tube at 70–85% power during lighter work meaningfully extends the practical tube life beyond the base 12,000-hour rating.

The 2-year machine warranty with 12-month parts coverage is one of the stronger warranty commitments in the OMTech Maker lineup — reflecting confidence in the H4 tube's production reliability.

OMTech Maker MF2028-100 100W CO2 Laser Cutter and Engraver 4 Way Pass Through

20" × 28" + 4-Way Pass-Through — No Project Size Limit

The 20" × 28" (500 × 700mm) working area is the consistent advantage this machine shares with the 60W and 90W AF/MF2028 variants — and at 100W, it delivers that large-format capability at peak cutting power.

Standard bed: Large sign blanks, full-size cutting boards, wide decorative panels, and production batch layouts all fit within the field without repositioning.

4-way pass-through: The front/back pass-through (32.8" × 3.7") accommodates material longer than 28" — continuous boards, long leather strips, extended banner panels — processed in sequential sections without removing the material from the machine. The side-to-side pass-through (20.4" × 0.7") handles material wider than 20" laterally.

For a sign shop processing full-length boards, a furniture shop cutting extended panels, or any production operation regularly working with non-standard material dimensions — both pass-throughs together remove both the length and width constraints from flat material production.

Ruida Controller — Full Production Control On-Machine

The Ruida digital control panel is one of the most trusted production CO2 laser controllers in the industry — and its capabilities on the MF2028-100 are what make this a real production machine rather than a desktop laser that happens to have a large bed:

Direct power and speed control from the panel — adjust parameters for a new material without returning to the design computer.

Frame preview before firing — trace the job boundary on the workpiece using the head position to confirm layout and alignment before committing laser energy.

Pause and halt — immediately stop or interrupt a job from the panel without software navigation.

Offline operation via USB flash drive — load files directly to the Ruida from a USB drive and run without a connected computer. For a production floor where the laser operates continuously while the design station handles other work, offline operation is standard daily workflow.

LightBurn has excellent native Ruida support — when you add LightBurn (separate license from Lightburn required), you get the most capable combination of controller and software available for a production CO2 laser at this class.

OMTech Maker MF2028-100 100W CO2 Laser Cutter and Engraver Work Area

Dual Workbeds — The Right Setup for Every Job

Both the honeycomb workbed and the aluminum blade workbed are included in the box:

Honeycomb workbed: The default for engraving and cutting lighter to medium material. Supports the workpiece while allowing laser pass-through without solid-surface reflection that would cause uneven marks and heat buildup.

Aluminum blade workbed: For cutting thick, heavy stock at 100W. Raised blade tips minimize contact with the cut material's underside, allowing pieces to drop cleanly with polished bottom-face edges — important for production cutting where each finished piece needs to meet quality standards without post-processing.

At 100W, the blade workbed becomes particularly important for the thick-material cutting this machine is designed to handle.

Water Chiller Required — Plan Accordingly

The MF2028-100 uses a glass CO2 tube that requires active water cooling. A water pump and water tank are included in the package for basic cooling operation.

For production use at 100W output, a dedicated water chiller is required — not just recommended. At full power sustained operation, the water temperature in a basic tank-and-pump setup rises over time, reducing tube performance and potentially damaging the H4 tube. A CW-5200 or equivalent chiller maintains precise coolant temperature regardless of ambient conditions and operating duration.

Budget the chiller alongside the machine purchase — contact our team before ordering for guidance on compatible options and appropriate chiller specifications for 100W production operation.

Frequently Asked Questions About OMTech Maker MF2028-100 100W CO2 Laser Cutter and Engraver

Q: What's the real practical difference between the 90W AF2028-80 and the 100W MF2028-100?
A: Two differences. First, power: 100W versus 90W — approximately 11% more output, which at production scale translates to marginally faster single-pass cuts on thick material and more comfortable operating headroom during sustained sessions. Second, focus mode: the AF2028-80 has autofocus; the MF2028-100 uses manual focus. If you regularly cycle through different material thicknesses and want autofocus to handle the focal calibration, the AF2028-80 may be the better fit despite the lower wattage. If maximum cutting power is the priority and you work at consistent material heights, the 100W manual focus is the right choice.

Q: Is a water chiller required, or can I use the included pump and tank?
A: At 100W production output, a dedicated water chiller is required — not just recommended. The included water pump and tank cannot maintain safe operating temperature during sustained high-power cutting sessions. A CW-5200 or equivalent chiller is the correct infrastructure for this machine. Contact our team before ordering for compatible chiller options and specifications.

Q: What is the Yongli H4 tube's service life?
A: 12,000 hours estimated service life — particularly when operated consistently at lower power settings. At 8 hours daily, 250 working days per year, that's approximately 6 years of rated tube life. The 2-year warranty (12 months on parts) covers the initial ownership period.

Q: Does it have autofocus?
A: No — the MF2028-100 uses manual focus with the included focusing rulers. For a 100W autofocus configuration, consider whether the AF2028-80 (90W autofocus) is the right trade-off for your workflow. Contact our team to discuss which specification matters more for your daily operations.

Q: What materials can it cut and engrave?
A: Engraving: Acrylic, wood, leather, rubber, paper, plastic, fabric, MDF, cardboard, marble, foam, and fiberglass. Cutting: Acrylic, wood, leather, rubber, paper, plastic, fabric, MDF, cardboard, and foam — up to 0.4" (10mm) maximum depth. The CO2 wavelength cannot cut raw metal — for metal applications, treated-metal marking (anodized aluminum, powder-coated steel pre-treated with laser marking spray) is appropriate.

Q: Is LightBurn compatible?
A: Yes — the Ruida controller has excellent LightBurn support. LightBurn requires a separate license from Lightburn and runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. RDWorks is bundled on USB flash drive.

Q: How does 4-way pass-through work?
A: The front/back pass-through (32.8" × 3.7") allows flat material longer than 28" to extend through both ends — process sections sequentially by advancing the material after each pass. The side-to-side pass-through (20.4" × 0.7") accommodates material wider than 20" laterally. Both pass-throughs together remove length and width constraints for flat material production.

Q: Can it engrave cylindrical objects?
A: Yes, with a compatible rotary axis attachment (optional add-on). The Ruida controller supports rotary axis configuration for 360° cylindrical engraving. Contact our team for compatible rotary guidance.

Q: Why buy from The Maker's Chest instead of directly from OMTech?
A: Our 75-day return window gives you real production evaluation time — significantly more than OMTech's direct return policy — enough to run the machine through your actual sustained production workloads and confirm the 100W configuration delivers before you're locked in. Our USA-based expert support team is reachable by phone and email for Ruida and LightBurn setup, water chiller selection, manual focus calibration, and production support. If you're choosing between 90W autofocus and 100W manual focus, we'll give you an honest recommendation based on your actual daily work.

  • 🛡️ 75-day returns — significantly longer than OMTech's direct return window. Enough time to set up the machine, run sustained production on your actual materials, confirm the 100W output delivers at your required throughput, and make a fully informed decision before you're committed
  • 🇺🇸 Expert USA-based technical support — our team can help with Ruida controller setup, LightBurn configuration, water chiller selection and setup, exhaust configuration, manual focus calibration, and any production issues
  • 📞 Dual lines of support — phone and email, so when production is running and something needs attention, you have a direct path to a real person
  • 🔧 Straight configuration guidance — 90W or 100W? Manual focus or autofocus (AF2028-80)? Do you need a specific chiller? Tell us what you cut, how thick, and how many hours a day. We'll tell you which configuration is right
