RF vs Glass Tube: The Difference That Shows in Every Part

FLUX-Hexa-RF-CO2-Laser-Engraver-Main

Most CO2 laser engravers — including the standard HEXA — use a glass tube laser source. Glass tubes work well and are cost-effective, but they have a ceiling on what they can produce. A glass tube's beam is wider, less stable over time, and rated for 2,000–6,000 hours before output degrades.

An RF metal tube is a fundamentally different technology:

Beam size: 0.07mm — RF metal tubes produce a tighter, more focused beam than glass tubes can. At 0.07mm, the Hexa RF's spot size enables detail that a glass tube's larger spot physically cannot resolve — fine serif text at small sizes, intricate linework at full speed, and photorealistic grayscale portraits where every transition is clean.

Stability: consistent output over time — RF tubes maintain their output characteristics across the full lifespan, rather than gradually degrading as glass tubes do over months of use.

Lifespan: 20,000 hours — compared to 2,000–6,000 hours for a glass tube, the RF tube lasts 4–10 times longer. For a shop running 8-hour days, that's a decade-plus of tube life before the first replacement.

No cooling infrastructure: The RF tube operates without a water chiller — less maintenance, less complexity, no risk of water-related failures.

FLUX-Hexa-RF-CO2-Laser-Engraver-Features

2,000 DPI. 2,000 mm/s. Both at the Same Time.

On most laser engravers, speed and resolution trade off against each other — maximize throughput and detail suffers, maximize detail and throughput drops. The Hexa RF is engineered to deliver both simultaneously.

2,000 DPI resolution is the maximum achievable on any CO2 laser in this class. At 2,000 DPI, the Hexa RF reproduces photographic detail, clean gradients, and sub-millimeter features with a clarity that makes the final product look premium — which directly affects the price point and perceived value of custom engraved goods.

2,000 mm/s maximum engraving speed with 3G acceleration means that 2,000 DPI detail doesn't come at a throughput penalty. The 3G acceleration figure is what matters for real-world batch production: the laser head changes direction quickly, maintaining velocity across the full working area rather than decelerating and recovering at the boundaries of each pass.

For a shop running leatherette patches, custom tumblers, personalized wood gifts, or acrylic signs in volume, the combination of high resolution and genuine production speed compresses the time-per-unit without compromising the quality that justifies the price.

Three Power Configurations — One Platform

30W RF — The entry point into RF precision. The right configuration for shops whose primary work is high-detail engraving on lighter materials — leatherette patches, paper, fabrics, coated metals, and thin wood. The 30W delivers 2,000 DPI and the full RF beam quality at the lowest operating wattage.

60W RF — The production workhorse. Significantly more cutting depth than 30W on wood, acrylic, and MDF, while retaining the full RF precision advantage. For shops that engrave and cut across a range of material thicknesses and need one machine to handle both functions reliably across full production shifts.

80W RF — Maximum output in the Hexa RF platform. The configuration for shops with the highest throughput demands, the deepest regular cutting requirements, or material thicknesses that 60W handles at reduced speed. At 80W, the machine runs heavy wood and acrylic cutting while maintaining RF engraving quality on the same job.

Not sure which wattage fits your production mix? Our team can help you choose before you order.

The Camera System That Eliminates Alignment Guesswork

The Hexa RF carries the same dual-camera system as the rest of the HEXA platform — and it's one of the machine's most practically important features for production workflows.

HD 16MP wide-angle camera (730 × 410 mm preview area): Renders the full bed in Beam Studio and lets you position your design visually over the actual material on the bed — including irregularly shaped pieces, pre-printed blanks, and materials where exact placement matters.

HD 8MP close-up camera: For precision alignment on small-scale work where the wide-angle view doesn't provide enough resolution to confirm exact positioning — fine jewelry, small tags, micro-text placement on components.

The dual-camera preview eliminates the test-burn and adjustment cycles that slow down material setup on machines with only red-dot positioning. For operators handling high-value blanks where a misfire wastes expensive material, the camera-based alignment provides the confidence that the cut lands exactly where intended before the laser fires.

FLUX-Hexa-RF-CO2-Laser-Engraver-Dimensions

730 × 410 mm Working Area — Plus Extension Options

The 730 × 410 mm (28.7" × 16.1") working area handles the majority of commercial production formats — full leatherette sheets for batch patch runs, wide sign blanks, full cutting board panels, and large acrylic pieces — with room to nest parts efficiently.

Three optional accessories extend that envelope further:

Extension Pocket Add-on: Increases the maximum working depth to 215 mm and opens the platform to the Chuck Rotary add-on for cylindrical engraving. Rings (11–145mm diameter), tumblers, bottles, and spherical objects (25–130mm diameter) all engrave with up to 500mm of length.

Auto Feeder Add-on (requires Extension Pocket): Enables continuous long-format material processing up to 2,185 mm in total length with the Extension Pocket installed — for continuous leather strips, long wood planks, banner material, and roll-to-roll production.

Class 1 laser safety (IEC 60825-1): The fully enclosed cabinet with interlock means no safety glasses required for observers, making the Hexa RF appropriate for studios, shared workspaces, and educational environments.

Beam Studio + LightBurn: Both Built In

The Hexa RF ships with Beam Studio — FLUX's native software with full camera alignment integration, material presets, and a straightforward design-to-cut workflow. For operators who already work in LightBurn, it's built in natively — no separate license purchase, no driver configuration, no workaround needed.

Both run on Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, iOS, iPadOS, and Android. Wi-Fi, USB, and Ethernet connectivity (via USB adaptor) are all supported.

The Hexa RF is also compatible with FLUX's Beam Air fume extraction series for a fully integrated air purification setup alongside the machine.

Frequently Asked Questions About FLUX Hexa RF CO2 Laser Engraver

Q: What is the practical difference between the FLUX Hexa and the Hexa RF?

A: The standard HEXA uses a glass CO2 tube — reliable, cost-effective, and well-suited for most laser cutting and engraving work. The Hexa RF replaces the glass tube with an RF metal tube, which delivers a tighter 0.07mm beam (versus a typical glass tube's 0.25mm+), up to 2,000 DPI resolution (versus ~1,000 DPI on glass), a 20,000-hour rated tube lifespan (versus 2,000–6,000 hours for glass), and 2,000 mm/s engraving speed. The Hexa RF also eliminates the need for a water chiller. For detail-focused work and high-throughput production where quality consistency is the business differentiator, the RF upgrade is the meaningful investment.

Q: Do I need a water chiller for the RF tube?

A: No. RF metal tubes are air-cooled — no water chiller, no plumbing, no coolant maintenance. This simplifies installation, eliminates a significant ongoing maintenance requirement, and removes a potential failure point compared to glass-tube setups.

      Q: How do I choose between 30W, 60W, and 80W?

A: The 30W RF is ideal for shops primarily engraving on leather, leatherette, fabric, coated metals, paper, and thinner wood where cutting depth is less of a priority than precision detail. The 60W is the most versatile configuration for mixed engraving and cutting across wood, acrylic, and MDF in the 3–8mm range — the right choice for most production shops. The 80W is for shops with the highest throughput demands or those regularly cutting thicker materials where 60W would require more passes. If you're unsure, contact our team with your primary materials and daily run length and we'll give you a direct recommendation.

Q: What materials can it engrave and cut?

A: Wood, plywood, MDF, acrylic, leather, leatherette, cork, rubber, fabric, glass (surface engraving), ceramic, marble, slate, cardboard, and most plastics. It also marks coated, painted, and anodized metals. It cannot cut bare metal sheet — that requires a fiber laser. For marking bare metal, an optional fiber module is available on some FLUX models but not on the Hexa RF.

Q: Is it compatible with LightBurn?

A: Yes — LightBurn is built in natively. No separate license purchase is required. Both LightBurn and Beam Studio (FLUX's native software) are available on the machine, and both run on Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, iOS, iPadOS, and Android.

Q: Can it engrave tumblers and cylindrical objects?

A: Yes, with the Chuck Rotary add-on — which requires the Extension Pocket add-on to be installed first. The Chuck Rotary handles rings (11–145mm diameter), cylinders (1–145mm diameter), and spheres (25–130mm diameter), with a maximum engraving length of 500mm.

Q: What is the Auto Feeder and what does it enable?

A: The Auto Feeder (requires Extension Pocket) enables continuous long-format material processing — feeding sheet material through the machine to a maximum processed length of 2,185mm with the Extension Pocket installed. This is the configuration for continuous leather strips, long wood boards, banner material, and production runs on material that exceeds the standard bed length.

Q: What's the safety certification, and do I need safety glasses?

A: The Hexa RF carries Class 1 laser safety certification (IEC 60825-1). The fully enclosed design with door interlock means no laser safety glasses are required for observers while the lid is closed. This makes it appropriate for open offices, shared studios, makerspaces, and educational environments where full enclosure safety is a requirement.

Q: Why buy from The Maker's Chest instead of directly from FLUX?

A: Our 75-day return window gives you more than double the evaluation time of FLUX's direct return policy — enough to run the Hexa RF through real production conditions and confirm the RF quality advantage is delivering the results your business needs. Our USA-based expert support team is reachable by phone and email for Beam Studio and LightBurn setup, material parameter guidance, camera alignment workflow, and production optimization. If you're deciding between wattage configurations, we'll give you a straight answer before you order.

          • 📞 Dual lines of support — phone and email, so when something needs attention during production, you have a direct path to a real person
          • 🔧 Straight configuration guidance — 30W, 60W, or 80W? Not sure which wattage is right for your primary materials and production volume? Talk to us before ordering. We'll give you a direct recommendation

          • This service utilises power tailgates with two-man crews or crane trucks when required and this is included in the quoted price.
          • The receiver will be contacted prior to delivery to arrange a suitable delivery date and time. Deliveries are scheduled for either an AM or PM slot on any given day.
