OMTech Galvo 20W Autofocus Fiber Laser Marking Machine Main Specifications

What the 20W Galvo Autofocus Is Designed For

Not every fiber laser application requires maximum wattage. For the core use cases that define most small business and workshop marking workflows — logos on metal gifts, serial numbers on components, QR codes on product tags, names on jewelry, barcodes on tools — 20W provides the output needed to produce clean, permanent, professional marks across the full range of compatible metals.

The 20W is the right choice when:

Metal marking is your primary work, not deep engraving or thick-material processing. Serial numbers, barcodes, fine text, and logo marks on stainless steel, gold, silver, aluminum, brass, and titanium all fall comfortably within the 20W's capability.

Compact footprint matters. At 21.8" × 13.2" × 28.3", the Galvo 20W fits on a standard workbench. For studios, home workshops, jewelry counters, and shared maker spaces where every square foot has a cost, this matters.

You're starting a marking capability and want a capable, reliable machine without over-investing in wattage you won't use daily. The 20W handles the everyday volume; the 30W and 50W variants provide more power headroom for heavier or more demanding marking loads.

A practical note: if you anticipate heavy production marking on harder metals, deep engraving with significant material removal, or sustained multi-shift operation at maximum output, the 30W or 50W configurations provide more comfortable headroom. Our team can help you choose before you order.

One-Click Autofocus — The Feature That Makes This Machine Practical All Day

Manual focus on a fiber laser marker is a repetitive friction point that most operators don't think about until they're doing it twenty times a day. Every time material height changes, you measure, adjust the Z-axis, run a test mark, check the result, and adjust again if it's off. That process costs 3–5 minutes per material change and introduces human error on every cycle.

One-click autofocus automatically adjusts the focal length for perfect accuracy, removing manual adjustments and guesswork.

Place the material. Press autofocus. The system measures the distance to the surface and sets the focal length to ±1mm positioning accuracy — automatically, in seconds. Then mark.

For a shop cycling through different parts — rings to dog tags to business card blanks to plaques — throughout a shift, the autofocus converts a friction-filled manual task into a single button press. The repeatability improvement also reduces the misaligned-mark rate that wastes material and time on manual setups.

10,000 mm/s Speed — Galvo Technology Explained

The 10,000 mm/s marking speed figure is a galvo laser number — and it's meaningful to understand what makes it achievable.

A gantry CO₂ laser moves the laser head physically across rails, limited by the mechanical mass it has to accelerate and decelerate at every direction change. A galvo fiber laser redirects the beam using high-speed scanning mirrors — there's no physical laser head movement, just optical redirection at rates that mechanical systems cannot approach.

This is why galvo lasers complete a QR code or logo that would take several minutes on a gantry machine in seconds. For production workflows where marking speed directly affects units-per-hour output, this speed advantage is the reason galvo fiber lasers exist as a category.

At 10,000 mm/s with ±0.01mm marking accuracy, the Galvo 20W produces fine text, detailed graphics, and tight QR codes at speeds that keep pace with real production demand — not demo conditions.

The 4.3" × 4.3" Marking Field — Sized for Its Applications

The Galvo 20W's 4.3" × 4.3" (110 × 110mm) processing area is smaller than the 5.9" × 5.9" field on the 30W and 50W variants — and for the applications this machine is designed for, it's the right size.

Jewelry pieces, dog tags, business card blanks, small component IDs, watch parts, and small trophies all fit within the 4.3" field. For small personalization businesses and jewelry studios where the vast majority of work involves individual pieces under 4 inches, the 20W's field is appropriate — with no wasted money on extra field size that goes unused.

If you regularly mark larger pieces — full-size plaques, wide trophy faces, or production fixtures with multiple larger parts nested in the field — the 30W (5.9" × 5.9") or 50W (5.9" × 5.9") provides the larger field that larger work requires. Contact our team if you need help evaluating which field size matches your typical piece sizes.

Compatible Materials — What It Marks Well

The Galvo 20W's 1064nm fiber wavelength is optimized for metals and performs well across the full range of marking applications on compatible metals:

Metals (primary application): Stainless steel, gold, silver, platinum, titanium, brass, aluminum, copper, iron, and most alloys. Permanent black marking for serial numbers, barcodes, QR codes, traceability IDs, logos, names, and detailed artwork.

Hard plastics and coated surfaces: Select plastics (ABS, PC) and coated metal surfaces — marking results depend on material composition and surface finish.

Additional surfaces: Wood, leather, and similar organic surfaces at the surface marking level.

What to be clear about: This is a standard galvo fiber laser — it marks metal in black and white. It is not a MOPA laser and does not produce color marks on stainless steel or titanium. For color marking capability, the MOPA 60W is the appropriate machine. For cutting wood, acrylic, or thick non-metal material, a CO₂ laser is the right tool. The Galvo 20W is purpose-built for high-speed, precise black marking on metal — and within that scope, it excels.

Software: EzCad2 and LightBurn — Both Work

The Galvo 20W ships with EzCad2 on USB flash drive — the industry standard for galvo fiber laser control on Windows (7, 8, 10, 11). EzCad2 provides direct access to marking parameters, array marking, barcode and QR code generation, rotary axis control, and all standard marking functions.

LightBurn galvo mode is also supported — on both Windows and macOS — for users already working in that environment for other laser machines. Supported file formats include AI, BMP, DXF, GIF, JPG, PLT, PNG, TGA, and TIF.

Frequently Asked Questions about OMTech Galvo 20W Autofocus Fiber Laser Marking Machine

Q: Who is the Galvo 20W actually designed for?
A: Jewelry makers and custom gift shops marking gold, silver, and stainless steel pieces. Small manufacturers marking serial numbers, part IDs, barcodes, and QR codes on metal components. Awards and promotional product businesses engraving logos and names. Any shop that needs a compact, bench-friendly fiber marking setup for everyday metal marking without investing in the higher wattage that heavier production workloads require.

Q: What's the difference between the 20W, 30W, and 50W Galvo autofocus models?
A: All three share the same autofocus arm, speed, accuracy, and platform. The 20W has a 4.3" × 4.3" marking field — the 30W and 50W have a 5.9" × 5.9" field. On wattage: the 20W handles everyday jewelry and small component marking effectively. The 30W and 50W provide more output power for deeper marking per pass on harder metals, faster throughput on detail-intensive graphics, and more comfortable headroom during sustained production operation. If your work is primarily light marking on soft metals and small pieces, the 20W is the right fit. If you're running the machine hard all day on steel alloys or dense graphics, step up to the 30W or 50W.

Q: Is this the same as a MOPA fiber laser?
A: No. The Galvo 20W is a standard Q-switched galvo fiber laser. It marks metal in black and white. It does not produce color marks on stainless steel or titanium — that requires a MOPA laser source with adjustable pulse width and frequency. If color marking is part of your application, the OMTech MOPA 60W Autofocus is the correct machine. If your work is entirely black marking for serial numbers, logos, barcodes, and similar applications, the Galvo 20W does everything you need.

Q: Can it mark QR codes and barcodes at small sizes?
A: Yes. At ±0.01mm marking accuracy, the Galvo 20W produces QR codes and barcodes at the small sizes required for tag labeling and product identification applications. EzCad2 includes direct barcode and QR code generation from data inputs, without requiring external design software.

Q: How does one-click autofocus work?
A: The system measures the distance from the focusing lens to the workpiece surface and adjusts the Z-axis to the correct focal position automatically. Press the autofocus button, the arm adjusts, and the machine is ready to mark — no manual measuring, no test burn required. Autofocus achieves ±1mm positioning accuracy and dramatically reduces setup time when switching between materials of different heights.

Q: Is the 4.3" × 4.3" marking field large enough for my work?
A: For individual jewelry pieces, dog tags, business card blanks, small component IDs, and similar work under 4 inches in their longest dimension, the 4.3" field is appropriate. If you regularly mark larger pieces — full-size plaques, wide trophy faces, or larger product panels — the 30W or 50W's 5.9" × 5.9" field is the better fit. Contact our team with your typical piece sizes if you want a direct recommendation.

Q: Is it compatible with macOS?
A: Yes via LightBurn galvo mode, which runs natively on macOS. EzCad2 requires Windows (7, 8, 10, or 11). Mac users can run EzCad2 through Parallels or Boot Camp, or use LightBurn as the primary interface with no workarounds required.

Q: What's the laser source lifespan?
A: The fiber laser source is rated at 100,000 hours MTTF. At 8 hours daily use, 250 working days per year, that's approximately 50 years of rated life before the source approaches end of life. This is a machine you buy once.

Q: Why buy from The Maker's Chest instead of directly from OMTech?
A: Our 75-day return window gives you real evaluation time — enough to run the Galvo 20W through your actual marking jobs, confirm the field size and power level are right for your work, and make an informed decision before you're committed. Our USA-based expert support team is reachable by phone and email for EzCad2 and LightBurn setup, parameter guidance, and production support. If you're deciding between the 20W and a higher wattage, we'll give you a straight recommendation based on your actual applications.

  • This service utilises power tailgates with two-man crews or crane trucks when required and this is included in the quoted price.
  • The receiver will be contacted prior to delivery to arrange a suitable delivery date and time. Deliveries are scheduled for either an AM or PM slot on any given day.
  • Delivery is to front car port, driveway, doorstep or wherever practical depending upon site access. Drivers are not permitted to move item(s) within the residence or around the property due to OHS reasons.
  • This service assumes reasonable and safe access to the site is available. Overhanging trees, steep driveways, unsealed driveways, narrow driveways or streets or an unforeseen obstruction may deem the delivery unavailable.
  • If your delivery address is in a regional or remote location, we recommend shipping to the nearest depot as the most affordable option.
