There's a reason the X1 is Xlaserlab's best-selling machine. At just 13 kg with a pen-style welding gun and beginner-friendly preset controls, it makes professional-quality laser welding genuinely accessible — without the steep learning curve of TIG, the heat distortion of MIG, or the infrastructure demands of larger industrial systems.
The X1 is purpose-built for one thing and it does that one thing exceptionally well: clean, low-distortion welding on thin metal from 0.2mm to 2mm. If your work lives in that range — sheet metal fabrication, stainless fixtures, decorative metalwork, small repairs, jewelry, brackets, or home workshop projects — the X1 delivers results that will genuinely surprise you.
At The Maker's Chest, we recommend the X1 for buyers who want to get into laser welding without overbuying. It's honest about what it is: a focused, excellent welding tool — not an all-in-one system, not a production workhorse for thick plate. For buyers who need cutting and cleaning functions, or regularly work above 2mm, the X1 Pro is the better fit. But for the X1's target applications? It's hard to beat at this price and weight.
The X1 hits a specific sweet spot that a lot of buyers are looking for — professional laser weld quality, in the most portable and approachable form factor available:
The X1 uses a 460W diode laser operating at 976 nm with a 50% photoelectric conversion rate — the highest efficiency rating in its class. Unlike the fiber laser in the X1 Pro, the X1's diode laser produces a broader, more uniformly distributed energy spot. This is a deliberate engineering choice, not a limitation: that wider, gentler energy profile is precisely what makes the X1 so forgiving and capable on thin material.
What this means in practice:
The X1 supports pulsed welding and spot welding modes. Pulse mode is ideal for seams on thin sheet metal where heat buildup is a concern. Spot mode gives you precise tack welds and controlled fusion points for assemblies and repairs.
Compatible materials: Stainless steel (including 304/316), carbon steel, mild steel, galvanized sheet metal, aluminum, brass, copper, and iron. For material in the 0.2–2mm range, the X1 handles it cleanly across all of these.
At 13 kg, the X1 is dramatically lighter than most laser welders, including the X1 Pro. That weight difference matters more than you'd expect. A lighter machine means:
The pen-style welding gun is another area where the X1 stands apart. It's designed for hand-steadiness and fine control, not just raw output — which is why jewelry makers, precision fabricators, and anyone doing intricate small-scale work tend to prefer it over heavier welding guns.
Like the X1 Pro, the X1 uses a fully integrated air-cooling system — no water tank, no hoses, no antifreeze. Just plug in, connect your gas, and weld.
The X1 is designed to be approachable without being dumbed down. The control panel includes pre-configured material presets for the most common metals and thicknesses — select your material, select your thickness, and the machine sets the parameters. You can override and fine-tune everything, but for most users in most situations, the presets produce excellent results straight away.
There are no complex parameter matrices to navigate, no tungsten prep, no arc-striking technique to master. The biggest skills to develop are maintaining consistent standoff distance (approximately 2–3mm from nozzle to workpiece) and achieving tight joint fit-up. Master those two things — which most users do within their first few hours — and the quality of your welds will impress you.
Both machines are excellent. The choice comes down to your material range, budget, and whether you need cutting and cleaning functions.

Choose the X1 if: Your work is primarily on thin metal (under 2mm), you want the lightest most portable option, you value the precision pen-style gun, or you're a first-time laser welder buyer who doesn't need cutting and cleaning functions yet.
Choose the X1 Pro if: You need to weld material up to 3mm, you want cutting and laser cleaning in the same machine, or you need 100–240V universal power input for a workshop that may run on different circuits. Not sure? Book a free consultation and we'll tell you straight.
The X1 ships as a ready-to-weld system in two pack options. Both include everything you need to start welding from day one. You'll need to supply your own shielding gas (argon is recommended) and a welding wire spool. One important note: the X1 requires 220V AC power — if your workshop runs on 110V, you'll need a step-up transformer. Reach out before ordering and we can help you sort the right transformer for your setup.

The X1 is a Class 4 laser operating at 976 nm in the near-infrared spectrum — invisible to the naked eye, which makes it more dangerous than visible lasers because you receive no natural warning before eye damage occurs. Standard welding helmets, sunglasses, and ordinary safety glasses provide zero protection against this wavelength.
The included laser safety goggles are rated OD8+ for the 900–1000 nm wavelength range and are the required minimum eyewear for all X1 operation. Everyone in the work area — not just the operator — must wear appropriate protection when the laser is active.
Additional safety requirements:
You can buy the X1 directly from Xlaserlab, or from a number of other resellers. Here's what makes buying from us different:
The X1 welds stainless steel (304/316), carbon steel, mild steel, galvanized sheet metal, aluminum, brass, copper, and iron. It performs best on these materials in the 0.2–2mm thickness range. For thicker materials or those requiring dissimilar metal joining across a wider range, the X1 Pro with its fiber laser is a better fit.
The X1 is designed for 0.2mm to 2mm. This covers most sheet metal work, thin-wall tubing, decorative stainless, jewelry, and light fabrication. It is not the right machine for material thicker than 2mm — for that range, the X1 Pro (0.5–3mm) or a traditional MIG welder is more appropriate.
The X1 uses a 460W diode laser (976 nm) optimised for thin metal (0.2–2mm), weighs 13 kg, and is a dedicated welding machine. The X1 Pro uses a 700W fiber laser (1080 nm), handles material up to 3mm, adds cutting and laser cleaning functions, accepts 100–240V input, and weighs 21 kg. The X1 is the lighter, more affordable, more beginner-friendly option for precision thin-metal work. The X1 Pro is the more capable all-in-one system for fab shops and heavier usage. See our comparison table above for a full breakdown.
The X1 offers pulsed welding and spot welding modes. Pulse mode fires the laser in timed bursts — ideal for thin sheet metal and situations where heat buildup needs to be controlled. Spot mode creates precise individual fusion points — used for tack welds, small attachments, and controlled joining on delicate assemblies.
Both packs include the same X1 machine and all core operating equipment. The only difference is that the Ultimate Pack adds replacement consumables — specifically a replacement protective lens and copper nozzle, which are the two wear items that need periodic replacement during normal use. For regular use, the Ultimate Pack is the better value. For light/occasional use, the Basic Version is sufficient.
Yes — shielding gas is mandatory for all welding operations and the machine will not fire the laser without a connected gas source. Argon is recommended for best weld appearance and quality. Nitrogen is a lower-cost alternative suitable for general steel welding. Gas pressure must be above 0.2 MPa with a flow rate above 15 L/min. Gas, regulator, and gas supply are not included with the machine.
The X1 requires 220V single-phase AC power with full-load current under 12A. It is not compatible with standard 110V outlets without a step-up transformer. If your workshop runs on 110V, you'll need to source an appropriate transformer before use. Contact us before purchasing and we'll help you confirm the right transformer for your setup — this is a common situation and an easy fix.
No. The X1 uses a fully integrated air-cooling system — no water tank, no hoses, no antifreeze to manage. This is a key reason for its 13 kg weight and its genuine portability.
The X1 is a Class 4 laser at 976 nm. Standard welding helmets and sunglasses provide absolutely no protection against this wavelength. You must use laser safety goggles rated OD8+ for the 900–1000 nm range — these are included with both packs. Everyone in the work area must be protected while the laser is active. Flame-retardant clothing, leather or flame-resistant gloves, and closed-toe shoes are also required. Adequate ventilation is necessary, especially when welding coated or galvanized materials.
On thin stainless steel and other sheet metals in the 0.2–2mm range, the X1 is faster, produces less heat distortion, and is dramatically easier to learn than TIG. TIG welding on thin material takes years to master and still risks warping — the X1's diode laser with its broader energy spot is inherently more forgiving. The weld appearance is clean and professional. The key differences to understand: the X1 doesn't replace TIG for thicker material (above 2mm), and like all laser welding, it requires tight joint fit-up with minimal gaps.
The X1 operates between -20°C and 40°C (-4°F to 104°F) and can be stored between -20°C and 85°C (-4°F to 185°F). It performs reliably in both indoor shop and outdoor field conditions within this range.
Yes — and we encourage it, especially if you're deciding between the X1 and X1 Pro, or if you have questions about your power setup (110V vs 220V), material thickness, or specific application. Book a free consultation through our website or contact us directly. We'd rather confirm it's the right machine for you before you order than deal with a return after.
